I know that quite a lot of flashlightholics favor long throw distance.
For me,taking one flashlights with long throw distance seems to be quite eye-catching,lol.
So,I want to know which one is the most successful long throw flashlight thus far.
Several days ago,I erperienced my brother's SR95UT and I think it's great for me and I was seriously tempted.

From what I've read you're not going to get any better than that SR95UT unless you go to a HID light.

SR95UT is claimed to have a awesome throw distance for more than 800. But it is a little too concentrated so I wonder if we have other choices.

How about the modded TN31 from the One Stop Throw Shop? They're claiming 240,000 lux.
hah, I have heard it for several times but I don't know if it is just a brag. So many brands are committed to develop some small flashlights for outdoor use due to they can earn more from that market.Maybe long throw is just a niche market and only a few of them spent a lot on this field.
 
OneStopThrowShop, owned by saabluster of OMG Lumens, is a reputable business. If he says his modified TN31 can put out 240k lux, the chances are that it will.

Just take a look at his past projects, like the DEFT and DEFT-edc. HIDs aside, I don't think any other LED lights can even come close to the sheer size-to-throw ratio of his lights.

There is always the Olight SR95 which has a little throw but more lumens and a wider hotspot. Plus it has fairly good runtimes.

Are you going to use the light for a specific task or tasks? I ask, because you did mention wanting maximum throw, but, also mentioned that you want to be able to see more a t time as well (Less narrow beam).

Most lights that maximize throw do it by concentrating as many of the total lumens as possible into as small a hot spot as possible, so as many as possible hit a small target way off in the distance.

In daylight, have you looked at things ~ 800 meters away? That's about a half mile, and its hard enough to see details in daylight at that distance, let alone at night. :D

This means that the compromise is sacrificing some of the lumens to spread out more, and cover a wider area, so there's fewer of them to concentrate on a distant target. So - a fat beam requires massive lumens to still have throw....which impacts the light's form factor, etc.

How large a light can you practically use, and, how long does it need to supply that high output?

How large a patch of light do you need at what range to do what you need it too?

How much lux on your target do you need to resolve the details you need to resolve?

(0.25 lux is considered to be similar to an average moonlit night, etc...)

And almost always his claims are rather conservative, I can't say I have ever heard him bragging on his lights, but that is all I have heard from his customers.
His lights provide solid performance and no nonsense. As soon as the budget catches up to me there will be one less modded tn-31 in stock.
 
The TK70 has a pretty good throw. Of course it isn't as "throwy" as the SR95UT but what I like about it is it has a larger hotspot and sidespill.
 
The TK70 throws great for a floody beam...I love mine. Its not much good past 400 meters or so though. Closer than that and it kicks serious *** though.

I like my TK70 as well. I agree with what you said. I think it will throw to around 500yds. But no LED light will light up the nite any better than the TK70.

So true. I will only upgrade mine when there is 'soda can' multi-emitter light that can substantially out-throw AND out-flood my 70.

Another TK70 lover here. Also excellent light for power outages and beating the crap out of intruders.

Depends on what you light. Stop sings should be visible over 2 kilometers, but trees become a little hard to distinguish from each other at 3-400 meters, although you can definitely tell they're there and they're trees.

I'll second this. Even seeing a person wearing safety orange is difficult past 800m. If they have retroreflectors then you'll see a bright point, but c'mon... 800m is about as far as you can identify things without binoculars, regardless of lighting.

And then some... I'd have difficulty recognizing my own father at more than 50 meters in a crowd in broad daylight. To spot a moose at 500 meters during the day, you need to stop and look around very carefully (and quietly).

Last GT I was with DerfyLED and Jak3All3n and we saw 3 pairs of green alien eyes in the field approx. 150-200 meters from us (ok, VERY BRIGHT EYES under the TK70). We still had to get within 75 meters -maybe less- to be 100% sure they were deer and we had 2 other powerful lights along the TK70. Things definitely don't reflect light equally.

I think that this is perhaps 97% correct but the 3% left over is huge for those out closer to the bleeding edge of throw.

--- Point 1. Since the OP is explicitly asking about, "...the most successful long throw flashlight thus far..." to rule out the use of binoculars might seem a bit of a stretch. In other words, you may bet your life that probably the majority of people who use the longest throw lights (whether portable or fixed) will be using binoculars. Nothing at all odd in that. In fact the more powerful the light, the more it screams to be used with optical amplification.

--- Point 2. "...identify things..." While counterintuitive, identifying things is not always the end all and be all in long throw lights. There are many real-world situations using max throw where the objective is not to identify what one sees but simply to confirm that it is different from it's surroundings. A clear example would be in a marine environment. On a given night, in a given locale all water looks pretty much the same. When one breaks out the throw-king on the water one is often just looking for things that are not made of water. That takes much less resolution and/or magnification than it would take to actually identify what one has seen. The utility of the light is in no way limited to mere identification.

At great distant the object is not visually identified, its just an object, even through glasses. Just recognizing it as an unidentified object may be of great value in a mariners situation, even it he does not actually know what it is. In this example, if I am familiar with the waters I may deduce an object's identity by knowing its general location and/or its location relative to other known objects or even unconfirmed objects that fit into a pattern in my mind or on a chart. This is perhaps the way it works most of the time. If it becomes imperative to actually positively identify an object, one may almost always move in for a closer look.​


While it may sound far fetched, it isn't. Its just a different way of working with lights. Worldwide, I'm sure thousands and thousands go out in ships and boats and use these techniques every night. I'm also confident that that there are many, many other effective techniques that are relatively unknown to people outside of those special niches where they are used.
