Hey everyone,
I absolutely love CPF. I have been following what people were doing here for a few years now and finally decided to do something myself. The light that started my fascination with big lights was a Thor 10 million candle power that I bought from Costco around 8 years ago. After reading what has been done with them I can't hold back and I have to modify mine. My girlfriend thinks I am nuts for spending so much time reading about flashlights. I figure that the easiest thing to do would be to switch it to a 55 watt HID. So I call upon the great wisdom and knowledge of all CPF members. The bulb inside my Thor is an H4. It has 2 filaments and a high and low setting. I am trying to figure out what kind of bulb to buy. Do they sell an H4 with just a single arc gap? I keep finding high/low bulbs that have a halogen and a HID together. I've also found dual xenon with 2 arcs. I know this is not what I want. Are there any other bulbs that fit in the H4 holder or do I have to modify the base?

Is this what I need? http://www.ddmtuning.com/products/101/

Also, I see that many suppliers offer a slim ballast. I have read someone on here saying that the slim ballasts are more efficient then the standard ones. Hope this is true cause that would be a double positive: space savings and efficiency.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

yes, almost every aftermarket hid-kit will fit without any modification as long as you buy one with h4-base.

no, why should they?

By the way, most (chinese) 55W-hid kits offered only perform as 35W kits.
Perhaps you should try 75W.

..There are a lot of reliable and not so expensive solutions out there.. (I took the most expensive one out there..but that's me..)

I modded three of those big Thor 15 Mcp Platinum a few years ago, they still perform flawlessly! But a Thor 10M will be nice too, certainly if you've never seen a HID torch (or mod..) before..

Keep us informed about this project...

regards,

Ra.

Thanks for the replies. A $2000 Maxxablaster type mod is a little out of my price range right now though. I ordered a 55W H4 kit so that will be my first one. Are 75W HIDs common? I could not find any kits for cars. I'm just looking for plug and play right now. So an auto kit seems easiest.

Sorry, I wasn't very clear about things: With my 15Mcp Thor mods, I meant my HID-mods which are much, much less expensive than Maxablaster. And your reaction was understandable: Maxablaster is a Thor 15Mcp mod too, I sometimes forget that..

I think you will be very pleased with a 55Watt system. The advantage is that they are commonly aviable for automotive purposes, so they are much cheaper than the less common, higher wattage systems.

All the best,

Ra.
