Which Surefire would you recommend? I'd like a bright light suitable for pocket carry with a clip. Long, tight throw and dual output would be great. I'm thinking about the L2 right now.

Any suggestions on easy modifications to make it better?

M6 will not work unless you have a big pocket. The 2 levels of light would be ok for a very short time by lighting it up in the pocket for high you just pull it out of the singed burnt pocket waving it around should help the fire dept. locate you to put your underwear out /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How do the low and high settings (light output and beam quality) compare between the L2 and the A2? Runtime comparison, anyone?

The L2 on low is brighter than the A2 on low.
The L2 on high puts out more lumens than the A2.

The L2 has a flood beam (like the L4) whether it's on low or high.

The A2 has a flood beam on low and the regulated incandescent give more throw than the L2 on high because the A2 has a tighter beam.

The A2 has both flood with it's LEDs and throw with it's incandescent.

IMO the strong point of the L2 is the low beam with it's regulated runtime of about 8 hours, and the strong point of the A2 is having both flood and throw.

These are both very practical lights.

edit: I'm just going on memory, but I think the

L2 high: 40 minutes
L2 low: 8 hours

A2 high: 50 minutes
A2 low: 20 hours
 
Thank you for the detailed comparison, Hoghead. It's gonna be a tough decision to make! I'm leaning towards the L2 if I ever get one just 'cuz there's not bulb to replace (although this might not happen than often). Then, again, I like throw! ... I think I'll have to find a dealer where I can play with these.
 
Thanks for the neat pics, Al. I always prefer "real life" shots instead of those catalog pics. The L2 is much bigger than I had envisioned... Those are really nice lights!
 
Yeah, I'd only seen them in the box, never together like that. Really puts the L2 into perspective. .
 
L2 is not a long throw light. It produces a lot of lumens for a "wall-of-light" medium flood on high. On low, it produces a lesser medium flood.

Yes the L2 is a bit longer, but not an unwieldy amount more. The length does make EDC on a belt a bit iffy. In my hand, about 1 inch sticks out fore and aft (the head and tailcap, pretty much) when I hold the L2. It is about 1/2 or 3/4 inch longer than a MiniMag.

The head diameter of the L2 is pretty small (just under 1 inch OD, with a reflector diameter a bit over 0.75 inch OD), so the whole package is about the same diameter (no big head getting in the way), but that small diameter head is also why it is a medium flood beam and not a tight-throwing light.

Bigger diameter and deeper reflector usually gives you a tighter hot spot and more throw. The G2, 6P, C2, C3 all have a 1.25inch OD head (more possible throw) and the A2 has a 1.13inch OD head (more possible throw than the 1inch E-series heads).

Long tight throw? A SpaceNeedle Lux3. But that's pocketable in a cargo pocket.

Long tight throw as in 10 feet, or 100 feet, or 100 yards, or 300 yards? Indoors or outdoors? How big are your pockets (physically and monetarily /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )?

You have to decide where to make the trade-offs in size, performance, and cost.
