I am looking for a longrange flashlight. I am replacing a Streamlight Super Tac X, I had stolen from my desk at work. I guess I was lucky when I bought the Super Tac X because I did not do research before I bought it and it was a good light. The only thing I did not like about it was the power settings. It was 100% or 10% and I need the 50% quite often. I am looking at the Nitecore MT-40 or MT-26. What light will do as good or better than the Super Tac X? Thanks, JT

Of the two nitecores that you listed the MT40 would more closely match the Streamlite for longrange. In some respects better, and other's not quite as good.
The candela is pretty much a measurement of throw, and Lumens of total light output.

Your streamlight specs.
High – 40,000 candela peak beam intensity, 200 Lumens, 2.5 hours runtime
Low – 2000 candela peak beam intensity, 10 Lumens, 50 hours runtime

Points to a very focused beam, where as the Nitcore has a broader hotspot for its beam.
Nitecore TM40 specs
860 lumens with 33,000 candela

IMO the useable reach of the streamlight is 200 yards and the nitecore 180 yards. BUT the nitecore will allow you to see a LOT more on the way out to the 180 yards, in other words you'll have a much wider field of view.

This is based on the manufacturer listed specs, not actual measurements of independant reviews.

Did you have a maximum range in mind (say in meters or yards, etc...) that would do it for you?
