Looking for a infinitely variable single AA or AAA LED flashlight

$30 max shipped.
Starting very dim is a must.
Max output around 50 Lumens or more.
Single AA or AAA.
LED.


I was going to do a QTC Mod, but shipping cost just may kill that idea. Also other than QTC and Magnetic control what other infinitely variable technology exists?

For QTC there are the Peak lights. They're beyond your budget, though, especially if you don't want to buy used. I'm no longer a fan of QTC lights that are not direct driven like the Quantum DD.

The older NiteCore D10 is a light that is no longer in production, but, it fits your requirements. It uses a single AA and the older versions would ramp from low to high or vice versa and it remembers the last setting used. It uses a piston drive system.

SunWayMan has their V11R, which is a CR123a light that either comes with an adapter or has an available adapter (I'm not sure here) to allow you to use a single AA cell. It's a magnetic control ring light with a forward clicky switch on the tail. It's about triple your budget, though.

There are others that I'm not aware of.
 
Thanks I'll keep an eye out for an old D10. So why do you not like regulated with QTC?
 
I've got the V11R and even M11R and neither comes with an AA adapter, but they're cheap at ~$15 shipped.

Obviously the V11R with AA adapter and sporting a Keeppower protected 14500 cell, or naked Sanyo 14500, would be the cat's meow, but if you went that route, you'd probably just stick with 16340s, like I do and keep things shorter.

You mean the additional extender for the AA is $15.00 making the light not even remotely in the under $30.00 price range asked for?

I had a Nitecore Sense? light that sort of did this and was pretty cheap but it drove me crazy and I sold it,I could never really understand what it was doing!

There I found it,it is the only one I know of and it might not work like you are thinking anyway.

I appreciate the desire to have what you list but I know of nothing near $30.00 on the market like this right now?

The variable feature is a premium feature and will be a premium price too at this point.

I should have quoted the guy mentioning the V11R and whether it 'came' with an adapter. I know that that $30 price point might be tough to hit. Oh well...collect some more beer cans, lol.

I have an ShiningBeam I-Mini, that runs on a CR123A/16340 and with the 1xAA, or 2xAA extension tubes, can run on AAs/14500s. The light is variable, from 4-110LM on an AA, but 7-260LM on a Li-Ion. It cost me about about $30 shipped, but that's without the AA, or 2xAA extenders, which were about $6-$7 ea. shipped, IIRC.

If you can get those Nitecores, they look pretty neat for not a lot of cash.

I posted the below quote in another thread but it applies here.

I'm no longer a fan of the QTC. Lights with a driver circuit tend to have the driver trying to boost the voltage and this exaggerates what I'm calling the 'QTC effect'. What happens with my Peak lights is that, when it is working smoothly, I'll set a low, low output and the QTC will settle, causing the output to increase. I then readjust it to a lower setting and it'll settle, though, not as bad the second time. Think of it this way: you've slowly turned the head from off to about 0.05 lumens and 15 seconds later it's increased to about 0.1 lumens. You loosen the head slightly to get back to 0.05 lumens and it'll settle at about 0.07 lumens. You can, of course, try to set it to 0.03 lumens the second time around so that it settles at 0.05. Either way, I don't like having to fidget with it. If you turn too far and turn the light off you pretty much have to repeat this cycle. I haven't noticed my Quantun DD doing this and it's direct drive so I'll blame this on the driver in my Peaks.
