I'm working together a new build and am trying to figure out if I would be better suited with an M60 or M60L drop-in for a (basically) Surefire 9P. What I'm looking for is a light that has a brightness/spill comparable to my Surefire L4, but with longer runtimes. I have read that the M60 burns pretty bright for about 1.5 hrs, and the M60L runs at a lower level for about 3+ hours. What I haven't been able to find is how either of those compare to the Surefire L4 in regards to flood and throw. I know the L4 is known for being a very floody light and I like that aspect of it, but I wouldn't mind giving up a little bit of that for better throw and runtime if the M60L is better.

Has anyone out there used an L4 and the M60L drop-in? If the M60L falls short, how does it compare to the M60 regular?

Thanks in advance.

I do not have the M60L, but do have the M30, which can be brighter than the M60. Comparing the beam pattern of the KL4 and the M30, my KL4 obviously has a less focused beam, while the M30 with its wider spread of light has a very bright focused spot. I know from looking at beam shots of the different M60 series lights that the M60L will still have that huge focused spot in comparison to the KL4 (L4), but the wider spread of the M60L will not have the amount of light in it that the KL4 does with its floody beam, as the lumes are distrubuted more evenly. The newer KL4's (L4's) can have upward to 120 lumens, and the M60L is rated by Gene at about 130 lumens, if I remember right. As you can see here I am questimating when it comes to the beam of the M60L, but I do know that the M30, with same optic as M60, has a wider undefined spread of light than the KL4. Maybe you need to go to the M60LF, or M60F, and you will have a beam that approximates the wonderful floody beam of the L4, without the distracting bright center spot of the M60, or M60L.

I have an L2 which has virtually the same beam as an L4. The Malkoff beam is even better than the L2/L4 imho. There's better transition from hotspot to spill, and the Malkoff has much brighter spill. The Malkoff M60L will outperform the L4 in just about every respect.

L4, M60, M60F, M60LF here.

Buy the M60LF. The tint and brightness of the LF are much warmer/brighter than the LF. Both are much more even than the L4.
