When I first got my Titan I took a picture straight into the emitters of my 120P, MJP Extreme III and Titan. All three of these lights are renowned for their low, particularly the 120P because it's such a popular light, but in the pictures I took, the 120P and Extreme III look incredibly bright, even though they were both putting out well less than 1 lumen, while the Titan shows the emitter as a dim glow. Titan wins all low-low contests! :twothumbs

...you could buy a light specifically designed for astronomy which lets you select from a range of brightnesses that go very, very low. Two of these lights are cheap and affordable... the Photon Freedom and the Rigel Skylite.
I'm going to have to get one of the Photon Freedoms and see what they're all about. Had lots of the regular Photons in the past but missed these ones.carrot be right, the Photon Freedom, loaded with a single CR2032, on it's lowest setting, is CRAZY low. Just enough to read my watch in a movie theater with it right against the crystal. It can start from low (or high), and is still a very modest light on high, but usefull for more general tasks. Don't forget all the levels in between, too.
The Rigel I don't own, but am tempted. With a thumb dial to set the brightness, it looks cool, and it's made for low level use.
I have actually been knocking out a variety of my own low-level lights this week by simply soldering a Nichia DS onto a 9V battery top (stolen from an old battery) with a resistor to set the brightness level. With a couple of the fingers of the old neg. connector (now goes to pos. on new battery) bent out, it can be pivoted in and out of contact for the worlds simplest switch. I bed the LED and resistor with hot glue to make it durable when I am done soldering. I find that with a 10K Ohm resistor, it is plenty bright for middle of the night trips with dark adapted eyes. Yes, 10,000 Ohms, it only pulls about 0.5 mA from a 9V battery and should run for about six weeks straight :crackup:. 3,300 Ohms is a bit brighter, and 1,000 Ohms is just too bright for this sort of duty. With a 220 Ohm resistor, it is a full-power 5mm light, about like a Fenix E01. I tried 100,000 Ohms on the bench, and it is glowing, but has no throw. I think the Rigel would have a hard time matching that level!
And I should add the commercial inspirations for the above 9V experimentations, both with very low low modes, as well as usefull highs: The Safelight Superbright and the PakLight. The latter is a little pricey for what it is, but it is very well designed and built.
Probably the best reason I can think of is when you do not wish to disturb your night adapted vision but still need to see more than ambient light can give, such as for astronomy, or night flying. Very often people want more light, but very infrequently people want less. But those who want less usually have some pretty good reasons.Excuse me if I come with a stupid question. Yes, I know that very low outputs are desirable for example for survival circumstances, to have usable light during days, and maybe weeks.
Also I guess for usable light without to be dazzled with dark adapted eyes.
To not disturb people when wants find or read something in the darkness?

Nitecore D10 has a very low lowest setting, though fully usable at close distances to find the way or read text. But you are asking for a brightness level of 1/10 or less of that...
