Why is there so much hype about the Luxeon Star LED because of what I have read the lightwave 4000 is just about as bright as the Luxeon Star but is using a lot less power so why is everyone talking about the the Luxeon Star LED being so much better

I suppose there`s been so much hype because it is new, breakthrough technology. A single LED that can outshine an array of 10 over-driven "normal" ones, now that`s got to mean something?

It offers a bright pure light in a compact package- with specially designed optics to focus that light where you want it, or just have the bare LED for a soft wide-angle area light. No problems with misaligned LEDs in your cluster, distorting the beam. No blue hotspots or rings. No large arrays of single LEDs taking up space. The white one`s colour is more pure and clear than those which Nichia has to offer- the colour is more uniform with hardly a hint of that annoying blue.

Remember that the primary intention of Luxeon Star Power Light Source LEDs is for lighting in home and industry. We`ll see them being offered in fixtures before long I reckon- think of it, a wall light or under-counter light that never needs a new bulb.
Shopping malls might start using them for decorative accent lighting- because the colours won`t fade with age and the life is at least 50x that of a regular incandescent, maybe even 100- so low maintenece costs there.
Factories can use them as inspection and work lighting in and around machinery as they don`t suffer vibration damage and the light is more pure, like daylight- clearer to see under.

The technology is moving fast and efficiencty is rising so before not too long (a few years I reckon) they`ll be overtaking the efficiency of halogen and even compact-flourescent lighting. Maybe you`ll be able to buy Luxeon Star LED "bulbs" that look and perform (ie-as bright) like regular A-19s but contain a few Luxeons and a power supply that keeps the current constant- and consume less power than an equivalent brightness compact-flourescent lamp.

Sure, they will also get used in flashlights- the fact that they are so small, and all the light comes from one point, makes them ideal. Imagine focussable-beam LED flashlights that are actually usable- finally as replacements for lesser incandescents. It will happen eventually.

While the present Luxeons may not be more efficient than current LEDs, lumen-per-watt-wise, remember it is only the beginning. They have been a big step in LED technology. The revolution has begun! Sit back and watch your power bills fall!

Are you sold on them now?
