I ordered a flashlight from International Outdoors for the first time. I wanted a 26650 light, I got a 18650 light instead. Bummer. I suppose that I was careless. But here is the top of my confirmation email from International Outdoors:

Notice the 26650 in the above text? Is that confusing or what?

I decided to have some fun with my brand new useless flashlight. First, I applied Nygel lubricant to the threaded ends of the flashlight body. Then, I filled a sink with cool water and placed the flashlight in the water. I turned it on and off a few times and then I left it alone. After about an hour, the flashlight began flashing. This indicated that my 18650 cell was just about exhausted.

I dried the flashlight exterior with a towel, and then I unscrewed the tailcap. The tailcap threads were nice and dry. But the flashlight itself was full of water. I can't tell if the water seeped in from the threaded top of the body tube, or through the bezel. My guess is that the water came in through the bezel. The body tube has two O-rings on each end and none of them are damaged.

The water in the sink was less than a foot deep. The flashlight is advertised as IPX8 waterproof. Do the math.

No return business for LXP. I am not sure what I think about International Outdoors at this point.
 
You do realize IPX8 is a meaningless "empty" standard.... right? I don't believe IO states specifically a 60 minute, 1-foot submersion for their IPX8 WR standard.

IPX-8 is not meaningless and not empty either. There is a Wikipedia page for this, just search Wikipedia for "IP Code". From the Wikipedia page,
The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.

The listing page for my flashlight at International Outdoor claims "IPX-8." This flashlight would not survive continuous immersion in water under any "conditions" that could be specified by the manufacturer. Someone is lying: either International Outdoor, or the flashlight manufacturer LXP.
 
Use it as a fun project light, figure out its weakness, fix it, and give it a spot in your arsenal.

No where does IO specify the conditions for their IPX8 water resistance.

IPX8 is a meaningless and empty standard if the manufacturer does not specify their WR test conditions.

You have assumed the design can withstand 60 minute submersion under ~12 inches of water. It is a mistake on your part to assume this is the IO standard. It is wrong on your part to say a design is not IPX8 compliant, without having a standard (specified by the manufacturer) by which to test.
