M@g ROP question

Hey guys.
I am going to make an ROP and I need to know a few things.

1. Is kaidomain.com a good place to get the things I need?

2. should I get a OP reflector or is the pelican bulb not very artifact-y so it would look good with a SMO reflector?

3. should the reflector hole be 15mm or 8.3?

4. where can I get a 6AA/2D adapter that will e able to withstand the current of the mod?

1. Good prices, slow shipping, I haven't had a problem in my (somewhat limited) experience.

2. I have a smooth reflector. It's perfectly acceptable (waaaaaaaaay better than stock), but an OP reflector would give you a smoother beam with a little less throw. It's up to you.

3. 8.3mm should fit an ROP, but not much else, so it limits your options if you ever try bigger bulbs. If the 8.3mm reflector has a flat spot at the base around the hole, you will get a ring artifact in the spill beam. However, with the larger opening, that light would just be lost behind the reflector. In general, the smaller opening may give you a little bit more total output, because less is lost behind the reflector.

I also had no problems with KD!

for the hole.... the 8.3mm is fine! it fits the Hi and Lo bulb.
If you would want another bulb you can always make it bigger, but the ROP is a very nice light! so why change?

I use a MOP reflector with cam. i have no experience with the SMO.
Let us know how it works out if you go for the SMO reflector!

OH I will be sure to let you know how it works! although I probably won't be ordering for at least a two weeks or so... but I'll try to get some good beamshots. I also haven't decided weather I'm getting the OP or SMO reflector....

What type of batteries do you guys recommend for maximum output/run-time? Keep in mind, I'm not rich. haha

oh and I want batteries that can all charge at once.(I guess that was more about the charger...)

I guess the hightest mAh MINH batteries you can find for your budget!
There are lots around for sale on-line or at your lacal store.
4.2 Amps on a 2.1 mAh batterie should theoreticly give you a runtome of 0.5 hours.

Mine has SMO big hole reflector.

It runs Rayovac Hybrids in a Five Mega 6AA-2D holder.

It has a pretty tight spot with some artifacts in it but once you get outside it is pretty nice.

I also have a 2D with a Magcharger bulb driven by 6 Hybrids in a Modamag 6AA-2D and using a small hole M2 MOP that has an uber nice beam! And puts more light out overall than the ROP hi.

ROP is throwier if that is what you want.

I prefer the MC light myself.

gold short tail spring...(I probably don't need it but I figure it will make it easier to put batteries in and out.)

multi-layer HD lens(52mm i believe)

A little update...
kaidomain order hasn't come in yet. it says is has been shippen though....

I just got my host, 2D maglite(red. I figured to make it look as cool as the light that will soon come out of it!)

any thing I'm missing? ( I'm still waiting for the money for 6AAs and the 6AA holder. hopefully soon!)

are you guys sure I don't need a heat sink or something? I don't want a meltdown the first time I try it.

also, where is the best/quickest/cheapest place to get the pelican bulbs?

for the heatsink,

I use mine without, but i want to built one inspired by this thread:

MagCTower - Heatsink for Mag C with quick-focusing system.

I have an old Thick D m@g. Almost nothinh default is built for it. Thats why i want to make one myself.

And, it uses a Pelican 3854?

If so, where do you buy a AA battery cage that will fit in a Mag 2D?

also.... I'm looking at the energizer batteries that are 2450 mAh. would these be good? I'm getting them because they are available at stores... but if they aren't good I would be willing to buy online..... and I almost forgot....... can I use these batteries in a larger charge bay? so I can charge all six in one charger rather than 4 in one and 2 in another...

The 2450 will work....

But overall something like Duracell "Duraloops" low self discharge at 2000mAh will give more satisfaction.

Because with them the light will work if you forget about it for a week or more.

I got my bulbs from lighthound, as someone else suggested. If that's all you're ordering, you could probably email them and ask if they'll ship it in an envelope or something, rather than a priority box.

The consensus seems to be that eneloops or Duracell LSD cells are the best for this application, because they hold their voltage well and don't self discharge as quickly. The standard store bought high capacity cells might give you more runtime, but they'll self discharge faster, and they generally won't hold their voltage as well. They'll work fine, but with LSD or special high current cells (like these, probably overkill, but they're what I use) the light might be a little brighter.

If you want to get fancy with your charging, you could also get a pack charger like this one, and charge all 6 cells at once without removing them from the battery holder.

Would those batteries(the titanium ones) give way less runtime? or what would the runtime be with six of these batteries?

or would these...http://www.batteryjunction.com/tpeh-taa2700.html be a better choice.. would there be that much of a difference between the two?
