Mag 3D / First mod questions?

Hello,

I have been reading through the various posts (actually a lot of them) related to modding a Maglite flashlight. I have come up with the following list of components and would like to know if I’m on the right track?

--- Maglite 3D ICAN D in serial # (I have quantity two)

--- H22AP7 Flat Top (didn’t purchase yet)

--- Cree XM-L2 U2 C1 w/ 14mm Round Base(ordered on their way)

--- Batteries: (Didn’t purchase yet) would like to run this off of 3 Ni-MH thinking about the Tenergy Premium D 10000mAh / or one li-ion (don’t know which one still studying?) I know to use the ion I would need to add some type of dummies to take up space. / If possible regular old alkaline in a pinch.

--- Driver: ( Didn’t purchase yet) From what I’ve read the 8x AMC7135, 5 mode Nanjg 105C should fit this build: Specs say it can run 1x Li-ion - 3x NiMH or 4x alkaline / 5 modes in 4 groups; low (5%), medium (30%), high (100%), strobe, SOS.

--- Lens: With the additional heat that will be generated should I be looking at an upgraded here?

I do have some what rusty solder skills and plenty of older components to practice on as suggested through my readings.

Perfectly on track, great choice of parts.

Lens isn't strictly necessary but always good to use a glass lens instead of the default plastic one.

Yes I kinda figured the lens would be OK didn't know for sure. I had also thought a glass lens would be better just makes sense. Ill add this to my list.

I really enjoined viewing your Mag2D Rebel build in your signature, nice job and pictures. Bookmarked for reference.

I make those write-ups so they can be used as guides. A fair bit of time goes into making thoses build-logs so great that they are appriciated :).

You parts choice is perfect as Epsilon said. The mod your planning is also the same as my first mod.

I have seen some of your posts while searching for information on the maglite mods. When you did this mod did you also modify the switch? I know its not necessary just wondering.

I have all the parts on order except the batteries, and still haven't decided on the lens.

why toting around massive metal bar with just air inside?

When going for Li-Ions, take three of them + the suitable driver,
or have the light cut down to 1 cell


PS: as a few times before, I am actually playing around with 26500s and 26650s and they simply are not better - in whatever way - but mostly way below the typical 18650 cell.
And the corresponding light is much smaller, thus easier to use.
You sure You will use the D-Mag enough to do the mod + spend the money?

Just cut the tower off the switch and solder the wires to to bit that stick out.

Well I was thinking I would go with the three Ni-MH D's for the first build. Good point and I agree.

I did see and read about the Shorty D mods / threads, I might consider this for the second mod? A buddy of mine owns a welding shop I could get some nice clean precise cuts there.

As an option in the Shorty D thread he is using 6000mAh 32650 Li-Ion cell with the 105c V2 driver. I also have one of these V2's on there way.

I use both of the 3D's all the time. I back up to the wetlands / woods that the Lab likes to explore, lots of wildlife and coyotes.
