Hi :)

I can't decide.

I picked up a Mag 3D host for less than 20 bucks at the local hardware store.

I really like the idea of using MR16 bulbs, since they have their own integrated reflector, and they are cheap, and easy to find new bulbs anywhere.

I already have the KD shorty spring and borofloat lenses and the ceramic sockets the way :)

Only thing left is how am I going to drive it?
3x D Li-ion cells are gonna be 12.6V fresh off the charger, but will drop below the 12V that the MR16's are rated at, very quickly.

12xAA doesn't fit, without some work done to the host, which I don't really want to go through, but would probably be the most practical solution.

Maybe some shorter C size li-ion cells in a wrapper?

I am most likely gonna be picking up a charger so I can charge them in series :p

If I go with the Li-ion route I think that batteryspace sells the pcb with the balancing so you can hook up a series charger and the pcb takes care of protection (overcharge/discharge) and balancing.

How hard can I drive MR16 bulbs? I know it probably depends on the bulb too, but I don't seem to see many Mag modded with MR16 bulbs.

Thoughts?

If you are planning on being able to use MR16s you find at your local hardware stores, you need about 20V (give or take, depending on the specific bulb) to make them worth running in a flashlight. They are terribly inefficient when driven to 12V.

Cool :)

I saw that one before.. might make a good idea for a bike light though. I got two of those ceramic bipin holders coming in the mail from Dx anyway :D

Now to find one of those folding bikes for commuting!
