Can anyone tell me what the G4 mod is....please!!!!
Not quite sure what you mean, but there are bi-pin bulbs that have G4 bases (meaning, I believe, that the pins are 4 mm apart). Some MR16 & MR11 bulbs that you asked about earlier may use G4 pins, but I believe most are G5.3 or G6.35 or something like that. Their pins are a little further apart and a bit thicker as well. Actually, I'm not so sure about MR11s, but at least MR16s are usually bigger. You can find out about MR16 bulbs
here.
Of course, you can't use these bi-pin bulbs (MR or bare bulbs) in a standard PR-base bulb receptable. That's what I guess you mean with G4 mod. There are a few options:
1)
Kiu socket (permanent mod)
2)
FM socket (reversible mod)
3) do it yourself, e.g. like this:
Just take a dead PR-base bulb and remove all parts except the metal jacket. Take two bits of 4-5 mm thick wire. Solder one wire to the inside of the PR-jacket and pass the other one through the hole at the end. Fill the gaps with epoxy. Trim and clean up. That's it, easy and cheap. The first time you insert a bulb, you may have to use a bit of force, so be careful and don't use an expensive bulb. It's not as nice as the abovementioned choices, but it works ok. Haven't tested it at high currents, actually, but it works good with the MagCharger bulb (1.7 A) you see in the pic.
You can also get ceramic bi-pin bulb holders from electronics stores for a DIY alternative that takes a bit more effort. They are just like the ones you can see if you follow the Kiu link above. (The Kiu kit comes with more stuff than just the socket, though.)
