I'm preparing to try my first major mod. I've got a 4-D mag-lite which will be my "victim". I've taken the head off and apart and there's plenty of room for the LEDs and switching regulator. Measuring internally from the top and bottom shows me that there's a section about an inch long inside which the switch lives. This section went together originally so I'm sure it can be taken apart but I don't want to break anything trying!
