I have a few Magchargers laying around and figured i'd go ahead and put a P7 in one of them.

What i'm looking for is what you guys recommend for a slug and reflector assembly. Also a driver/regulator that can take ~7V in and drop it down to 4V or so and regulate it to 2.8A.

Also, due to the deeper reflector of the magcharger ( VS the P60 dropin that it's currently in) what do you think the beam quality is going to be like? I'm looking for a nice thrower.

Thanks for any info,
Dave

Would be nice see if somebody would has pics of magcharger with P4 or P7. If someone has experiences of this kind of combination, please share you opinions?

As am I! There are several investigators in my office that have Magchargers and want me to mod them, but I've been reluctant.

...not to put any pressure on you....

lol, i have 3 magchargers. only 1 has a brand new battery pack. The other 2 are empty and 1 has a 50W halogen in it.

I found them at work in a pile of old crap in a storage room.

The plan right now is to try and use the magcharger battery pack, i'm sure it'll work for now.. I also have a 2D mag on my desk with 2 18650's and a P91 clone lamp that might get a P7 as well. :grin2:

well, i got all the parts yesterday and slapped it all together. Didn't get to do a runtime test since i managed to lose my thermal epoxy but it did work. The KD "super SSC" 3 mode driver seems to work well.

I've got it all apart right now fitting everything into a regular 2D mag. running it on 2 18650's with a total of 4800mAh VS the 2200 of the magcherger pack seems to be the more logical path.

So.. if you purchase the DHS heatsink for a D mag, a P7, a regulated driver and a 2 piece MOP reflector from KD you can mod your magcharger. You might even be able to use a regular magcharger reflector if the center is bored out to fit.

The throw is awesome :D

Here is the DHS heatsink not fitting the Magcharger switch tube:

a little grinding...

and it fits!

that's the only major mod other than cutting the metal tower off the switch assembly and soldering wires to ground and switched +V

If i can come across another P7 and a driver i'll certainly slap this magcharger back together :twothumbs

do you have anymore info and pics (beam shots) of this setup? i have been thinking of doing this for my magcharger. did you use a certain driver with the stock battery? how much of the switch assembly did you cut? sorry fro all the questions but didn't want to start a new thread.. thanks

When i get the 2D Mag together again i'll post beamshots of it.. should be the same.

i have the KD part numbers of the reflector and driver at work, i'll post those up and more pics tomorrow. :)

that would be great:thumbsup: also do the drivers handle the voltage of a magcharger batter pack?

the one i have is 5-15V input so the 7ish of the Mag pack should be ok.

I'm using 2 unprotected 18650's in it right now.

Here are some beamshots.

my U2 Ultra on high, 50-60 feet to the neighbor's garage.

since it has 3 levels i'll be using it alot. It's a tad too big to EDC but it'll work great for urban exploration and climbing through the local caves. I need to make a new battery sleave, McMaster-Carr has some 1.25" ABS plastic solid rod that should be easy enough to machine and use. $10/foot.

Hi Superdave!

I'm glad that i was lucky enough to be redirected on this thread:). I'm looking for some ways of modding my Mcg with p7, but i was quite dissapointed because there is not a lot of people who had tried this before... Here i have some questions for you: What did you mean with "cutting metal tower off the switch assembly" , what are all the parts needed to perform this mod, does flashlight keep it's focusing ability, and most important, it's this mod reversible? I have a terralux tle-300MR dropin in my MCg, which is quite bright, but i miss the old focusing ability and look for some more throw. Any informations would be highly welcomed.
Thanks in advance!

Not quite reversable since you have to cut down the spring loaded tower that would normally hold the bulb.

I dont have any good pictures of the tower, i'll snag some tomorrow (all the stuff is in my desk at work).

I don't know about focusing ability on the magcharger, it dosen't have a threadded head like the regular 2D mag. Tomorrow i'll put my reflector into the Magcharger and see how it works out, some creative shimming of the slug might be needed.

Focusing on a Magcharger Dosen't look like it'll be easy. The slug will have to be shimmed up about 3/8" just to get the emitter to it's sweet spot in the reflector. You could use thin shims to get the right focus but it wouldn't be adjustable on the fly.

The LED puts out enough light that it's really not a problem though. :grin2:

I used this KD reflector: http://www.kaidomain.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductId=1739

If you do this P7 mod with the DHS heatsink, make sure to get the Mag reflector with the 15mm opening.
