Hey guys, I wanted to ask a question to yall that make a lot of paracord lanyards and stuff.

If I want a 10 foot "rope" braided cobra knot style, obviously my 2 inner strands need to be at least 10 feet long, but how long do the outer strands need to be? Is there some type of ratio or formula to figure it out? How about the spiraling (probably not the right way to describe it) cobra knot, is it any different?

Thanks!

Hello -

Thanks EXCALIBUR1 for posting a link to my blog article.

In addition jugg2, if you'd like to come back over the top of the cobra/square knotting/solomon bar with another layer of the same knots called "king cobra," you can demo it for 6 inches or so then use the formula to figure out the "x" value and then you'll know how much paracord it will take to do the whole 10 feet

Sometime back I figured the king cobra out for x=0.167 but don't go by me. Please try it yourself.

You should also be able to use the formula with the "spiraling" you're talking about.

And remember, you're only finding the length of one strand so double it then add a bit more on each working line. Experiment first.

Thanks,
Dave

Just out of curiosity, how strong is is a rope made of cobra knots? Obviously the you have the strength of the two inner strands is the same , but how is the strength of the two outer strands affected?

Hey jugg2 - interesting question. My guess is nobody knows for sure and it depends on other stuff anyway...

But take a look a bit down this page http://www.layhands.com/Knots/Index.htm
for Knot Strength Ratings

and the links will take you to posts on the International Guild of Knot Tyers (IGKT) forum - where the people who are interested in such things hang out.

Good luck in your journey,
Dave

I made a six foot cobra stitch dog leash with 6 inner strands all out of one piece and I in for well over 100 ft. Only you know exactly what you want but if you wanted something round - I would go with the 4 strand round braid. Quick and easy.
