Making GIF animations

I looked everywhere and cant seem to find a free program that allows me to make my own animations. i have seen some in the posts.

I have an older copy of "gif movie gear" from a software cd that came with a computer magazine. seems to work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

might be worth looking for free stuff here.
