Gene has been busy working on the M61, new XP-G Wildcats, and another sweet prototype light (that I will no-doubt have to get once released). Since finding any of his Mag mods is difficult right now, I suggest a turnkey MD2/M61. You can run it on 1x 18650 or 2x (R)CR123s.

I have an old but faithful 2D-Cell Maglite, and I'm considering upgrading it with a Malkoff Drop-In...

For me the 2D size flashlight is just to big now that I know what current technology has to offer. Before I found CPF D cell lights were the norm. The Malkoff drop-in won't really make it a barn burner and the same amount of lumens is common now days in a much smaller form.

If you want to eventually enjoy a collection with many different kinds of lights, look for a used Malkoff drop-in in the marketplace. Otherwise I recommend just getting a new, more versatile light.

I just saw a youtube video with the Maglite 2D comparing the stock incan against the malkoff drop-in...

The malkoff was exponentially better, but you're right, still not a barn burner....

Arrgh, i'm selling my Malkoff maglite dropin, but its the 4-5-6D version with the SSC P4 in it. I guess you could run it with 2 Li-Ions and a modified spring... but honestly, if you are going to start modifying things like springs, and li-ions, then it would probably be cheaper to get a new light. Unless you like the 2D format of the maglite?

I have Malkoff dropins in several of my Maglites.

Two things to take in consider about Malkoff-dropins:

1: Malkoff dropins give wide useful beam with a well focused hotspot for very good throw

2: though much smaller lights put out the same or higher brightness, a Malkoff dropin to a Maglite will strongly outperform them (especially with D-cells) when it comes to runtime at the given brightness. Even using alkalines you will get several hours of nearly stable output.

Personally I like Malkoff dropins so much that I bought several new Maglites of different colors just for the purpose to arm them with a Malkoff.
For me a Maglite has it's charm, and by replacing the stock incan bulb with a Malkoff dropin you will combine the beauty of Maglite with the latest LED-technology. I like that!

Advice to the OP: if Malkoff dropin is not available for the moment, get a smaller new light. Later you can get a Malkoff dropin to your Maglite! :)
