Does anyone know if one can buy those optics used in M60/M30 type drop ins. I like the frosted lens found in the "F" variant. If so, what are they called and where can I buy it.

Can these optics be fixed into the current M61?

yea, the flood lens on the M60 and M30 are great. Not sure where you can find them.

I have to think the distance between the LED and the lens is different between the two. In the reflectored version, you're trying to put it as deep inside the drop in as possible but in the optic version, you're placing it to optimize the focal point. I have no basis for this other than pure theorizing.

Drop ins come up all the item in the market place. Maybe just wait til you find one. Then you'll have both!

The optics on the M60/M30 are optimized for the CREE XR-E LED. I don't think that You will get good results by putting them in a M61. You should look for CREE XP-G optics. This doesn't answer the question whether the XP-G optics fit into the Malkoff M61s.

Did the "f" variants also use the XR-E? Seems counter productive to use a throwy led for a flood light. Of course the XR-E may have just been the brightest thing out at the time.

The XRE is what is used in the all of the M60/M30's. My favorite pocket light is a E1B that uses a XRE. Im not aware of any current production lights using the XRE now, but it is still available. Something for you to think about for flood options. If you are using malkoff hosts, you can get a lens from flashlight lens . com and have them put diffuser film on it for you. The 22.61 x 1.1 size fits the M61 reflector shelf perfectly. The thickness dimension can fluctuate slightly and still work. For surefire hosts oveready has you covered.

I have heard on good authority that they were 100% interchangeable (i.e. the only difference between a Malkoff 'F' and the standard version was the actual optic - one module could be made into the other version by switching the optic.)

nice! i wish there was a place to buy the standalone optic just for kicks, you know?

edit: to try on different malkoffs.

what if i did, say, take the flood lens off an M60F? would that be a bad idea?

edit2: wondering if a flood lens would fit on my 219 Malkoff atm

I think the F optics can be swap around the M30/M60 models, not the M61s.
