I've been looking to make this sort of science project for quite some time now. The whole idea is to make something with such high light output that it can set things on fire, light up the night sky, etc, while being completely pocket-able.
Battery life doesn't matter. Neither does duty cycle. Or cost. Or heat output. So a strobe would be perfectly acceptable.
I'm surprised you guys don't use more exotic cooling methods like Peltier or fan+heatsink more often. If air was forced over a heatsink to cool a carbon or mercury vapor arc lamp, that would work. It'd be nice to have nice and concentrated beam too.
So yeah, let me know if you guys know of anything like this. I've been looking for quite some time. I tinkered with lasers for a while but decided they were way too dangerous since simply seeing a laser dot from a laser powerful enough for my purposes on an object could cause damage to eyesight. (I ended up making one, becoming terrified of it, disassembling it and hiding it in a drawer)
