I looked everywhere and the batteryspace.com D's seem to be the best bang for the buck around. They are definitely NOT AA cells inside a D cell package and are HEAVY! They really seem quality built. The MAHA's are great but not for that much difference in price.

I once picked up a pack of the *phoney* nimh everyeady D cells rated at 2300mah, they are about half the weight of alkalines I believe.

That's why they call them 'lightweight' versions sometimes. That's marketing. You have an inferior product and you look where it could be betetr as the standard product. For these cells, containing some air, it is the weight. .-)

On low-priority applications I use adapters with AA cells.

Both Vanson and Accupower buy the case they use for their chargers from the same vender. Externally, the Vanson uses a different LED scheme for feedback to the user. Internally, they are completely different machines. This has been covered pretty well in the 'Best Universal Charger' thread.

I saw those 11,000 mah d batteries. but haven't bought any. At local stores I see nimh d batteries @ 2200mah for about $5 ea. (energiaer brand). I'm interested but part of the reason I haven't bought any is because I only have 4 items which take d batteries a mag 3d, 4d, cheap 2d, and a beat up radio which takes 4 d batteries. I have 8 d rechargeable batteries 4 rechargeable alkaline, and get ready to laugh, 4 radio shack nicd @ 1400mah. I'll use my aa to d adapters for a while if needed.

those lightweight D cells don't inspire people to buy nimh from the store and more inspire people to buy lights and devices that don't take C and D batteries that they want to use rechargeables in.

I see nothing to laugh about using nicd Ds if that is all you can get. Run time may suck but if you can recharge them 50 times you save a lot of money over alkalines for sure. I have two ideas myself.. install DC input connectors that shut off battery power and use external packs made up of more cost efficient rechargables or save up for nimh D cells , or make my own 3,4AAtoD adapters with a quick release on them.

That is a little cheaper than amondotech.. if shipping is the same but I don't use D cells enough to facilitate buying 72.00 worth of D cells and a 25.00 charger to have 8 reusable uber D cells... that is nearly 100.00 and I can get about 120 generic alkaline D cells for that price I would have to recharge the nimh over 15 times to break even which I do not think I would use at this time in 10 years. I rarely use my D cell stuff any more since I have nimh AA and AAA based lights and a rechargeable SLA spotlight.

I believe the largest capacity tabbed nimh D is probably about 9000mah. I haven't seen any 11,000mah tabbed versions but you may be able to buy them and use them anyway with solder or a spot welder and wire or tabs/bars
here is one place selling tabbed cells here, I find the 8000mah looks to be a better deal if the rating holds up at 6.75/cell. hmm I didn't know they made F cells in nimh... 12,000mah too bad they want $15 for the things.. YIKES!

If the batteryspace *powerizer* brand are near their rating their 8xnimhD deal like Gene said earlier looks to be the best deal for under 6.00/cell if shipping isn't nuts. Depending on what you were using them for you could solder your own wires/tabs/bars to them instead of purchasing tabbed cells and save a few bucks or more.

A few months ago someone posted a URL for high-quality rare earth button magnets in many diameters and thicknesses. They are reuseable, they last for ever and you don't have to worry about messing up the cells vent while soldering. Some use them with cells that are a little too short, also.

tabbed cells are just a little easyier to deal with.

Yes and they are also shorter too, which can let them fit in tighter spots. It comes down to what capacity/price you can get in tabbed cells vs non tabbed. If you can get acceptable capacity and cost using tabbed then why not? If you want higher capacity not found in tabbed versions and pricing is cheaper on non tabbed you may decide to opt for regular cells and a work around to connect them properly.

I have never soldered tabbed cells much. I have found it easy to solder wires between cells to connect them myself
and have heard that some tabs don't carry very heavy currents as well as the copper bars/wires of heavier gauges.
If you are not using more than a few amps tabs should probably be fine.
