You can get a clamp on Ammeter. Best way to not introduce any series resistance and have to break the circuit and add you meter in series. Fluke, Extech make models. Most clamp on meters do AC current only.
Extech 30942 does both AC and DC current in the clamp on section. More pricey than the ones that do AC current only, but, it might be well worth it if you are doing a lot of testing.
