I was at Academy Sports and Outdoors yesterday looking for new bowling shoes.

Of course I wondered the flashlight isle. I mean what do you really expect?

Right next to the 3x5MM modules were maybe a dozen "NiteIze Super-Bright 1 watt L.E.D. Upgrade".

The module is a bi-pin gadget that looks like a larger version of the Solitaire drop in that was available here on CPF. A disk contains the circuitry.

The disk is about 1/8" thick and I am not able to say what it is made of.

It has reverse polarity protection, and will only light installed correctly.

I don't BELIEVE much more than anything has been done about heatsinking. But perhaps it has a thermal throttle of some sort.

It comes with a replacement reflector.

To a degree it is focusable. Tuned to the best spot I can give it a perhaps 10" spot at 6' from a white wall. No noticeable artifacts show.

Brightness isn't all that great, but is respectable at the very least. There seems to be an ever so slight blue tint, but it is nowhere near objectionable.

It must be noted: The thickness of the disk is such that not a lot of threads are used to hold the head to the body. Acyually not much more than one half turn holds it. I will likely teflon tape the threads or sport tape the body as I use a tailswitch on the host.

It was just under $20 including Uncle Sams share.

Not sure what else I can say about it. I am far from displeased at the purchase.

On a 1-10 scale I'd allow it a 7 I guess.

I;m curious how this upgrade compares to the SMJ LED upgrade available at the sandwich shoppe for $11?

That one is based off a 5mm SMJ LED, so it is likely bluer, but the runtimes are 10+ hours (I believe). I have one, and it's pretty good, not super bright, but not bad. I know the Nite Ize IQ switch does dim it noticably. I've heard the IQ plays well with the new Nite ize 1W.

I just don't want to spend any more experimenting with my minimag! Have too many crees to try out!

:D

I don't have a minim*g SMJ, but do have several SMJ PR in 2AA lights.

Compared to the nominal 2AA PR host (the 97 cent 2AA that used to be available at Walmart) the NiteIze is MUCH more white, a little tighter of spot and compared head to head at least 30% and I'd say more like 50% brighter.

My Cree modded Mini of course leaves it for dead.

My Dorcy 1L 1W isn't quite as tight of spot, and at the same distances not much brighter. My 3AAA Dorcy 1W is very similar in spot size and quite a bit brighter than the NiteIze (as it should be!).

I don't have anything except MK1 Mod1 Eyeballs and a stopwatch with which to do runtime. Perhaps I'll try it later when the spot on the wall will be more noticeable.

I just picked one of these up from target as well. Mine has a green tint, but it might actually help color rendition outdoors. I love the interface of the IQ switch, especially the momentary on. The button has given me some problems though, as I sometimes have to press rather hard to get it to work. All in all a very nice upgrade. I think it will be great with a seoul p4 upgrade.

I'm in Memphis for work and at a Target there was this unit. Looked at all three and nly one had the emitter touching the disk. Looks like a tab under it to conduct heat if it were touching. Bummer.

Got the new RR 1watt AA instead
