MISUSE OF LASER POINTERS - A WARNING

Just a polite warning that if you misuse a laser pointer, this is the kind of grief you can find yourdelf facing. These are UK specific laws. I assume USA laws are very similar.
I know we want to have fun, but be sensible with what can be a very dangerous item.


By shining a laser at an aircraft, you are committing an offence under the "Safety of air navigation act". If convicted you face up to 6 months imprisonment AND £100,000 fine.

By using your laser outside I.E. not private property you are violating HS(G)95. The Health & Safety Executive rules on public use of lasers. Basically an un-authorised display. The HSE can implement £UNLIMITED fines.

By Shining the laser at a Police vehicle you are harassing the Police in the execution of their duties. I dont know what penalty you are liable for if convicted.

If your actions result in property damage you are liable for criminal damage.

If you injure someone you are looking at GBH. Up yo 5 years prison.

If you kill someone its Manslaughter. 20 YEARS.

I recall a news story about possible terrorists plans to use lasers to blind pilots and the story posted here a few months ago about a plane being lasered was mentioned.

I cant say the idea to laser a plane ever crosses my mind. I would aim for the moon myself.

In my city, it's a misdemeanor to point a laser in the face (eyes) of anyone. I've also been told by some members of the local constabulary that if anyone pointed a laser toward them at night, they would strongly consider shooting first and asking questions later--seriously (not that any CPF'er would do such a thing). They said they'd probably be justified considering the possibility that, around here, it could be a laser from a gunsight. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I know when those keychain laser points came out to every drug store they started to use them in va beach to point at cops and what not. Made the news for that area. The news anchor said the cops were over reacting and they too feared it was a laser site from a gun.

Kind of reminds me of the seinfeld episode where they were getting hit with laser pointer and George wore mirror glasses to to protect his eyes till Jerry pointed out that he could get him from the side.
