Modding a Zebralight H30 or H501?

I don't have one yet. I would like to replace the LED with a Red Cree. Has anyone tried removing the pill, or any other serious mod? Thanks.

I'm digging out this 10-year old thread, since I would like to swap the emitter on a red H501 (H501R), to replace it with a white one.
