Modern PS3, Nintend Wii, video question?

Or even older video consoles such as PS2, if you still have a crappy regular TV, can you hook them up directly to a computer monitor and take advantage of it's higher resolution? I always wondered about that because the newer game consoles boast sophisticated graphic engines yet in many cases, it will be ported to a regular NTSC TV screen where your lowest resolution computer monitor will beat that.

If you have some kind of TV/capture card in your computer that can take a composite video input then yes you can play it on your computer. The image may look cleaner due to the smaller pixels on the computer monitor but that doesn't necessarily mean the video will look better.

Or if you have an LCD monitor (Like my 20" Dell widescreen) that takes composite inputs then you could hook your console directly up to that to bypass the computer and you won't need a TV/Capture card then.

Use S-Video. It looks a lot better than composite.

If you have access to an HDTV with component (YPbPr) input, that should look even better.

But yes, you'll generally need a PVR card of some sort. The bonus is that you can then record images, music, or video from your videogames!
