My parents sent us a beautiful Mag-Lite Rechargeable for Christmas. It includes a 6V NiCad battery pack.

Anyone know what the best mods are to make this into an LED light? Is this particular light even a good candidate for use with LEDs? Preferably regulated.

Just noticed this was moved to the Mod forum. Any of you folks have suggestions? I like my spiffy new rechargeable mag-lite but have the feeling I would like it more as LED. What's the potential with this little puppy?

Potential is that with a LED it won't be as bright. There are many options for modding. But what would be your aim in modding it? Battery Life? Brightness? Weight? Asthetics? Durability? Functionality? Tell us which one is it and I'm sure ppl here have loads of advice for you.

Mod I'd like best is a NiMH pack. I don't know why all the rechargeable lights in that size use NiCd. I love the mag charger but the runtime sucks, and it's better than the SL or SF (specs).

Nerd, I know the LED option might not be quite as bright, but since we live in the country and are prone to power outages, I guess I'd like to mod the light to run longer. I also like the unbreakable nature of LEDs. So I guess my goal would be maximum possible brightness with runtime of at least 4 hours. My dream would be the above plus regulation so it runs super bright for as long as possible, then either enters a "moon mode" or dims gradually. This way I would feel like I could count on the light never suddenly going dark.
