Tonight I was messing around with a monocular, and I got the bright idea (pun) of shining my MadMax+ through it.

When the MadMax is placed against the eyepiece, the result is a very small, tight spot output through the objective lens. (This is a cheap Vivitar 8x21.)
It had considerably farther throw. If there were a smaller collimating optic, that matched the ~1.2 cm eyepiece lens, then that lens could collect much more of the output of the MadMax.

Have any of you played with binocular/monocular/lenses, and flashlights?

I think Craig took my 5W greenie with a pair of binoculars and was able to cast a tiny green beam over a mile away. As I recall he was having a good time shining on some apartment window till he noticed how woke the patrons sleeping there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Ah, how sweet it is if there's a setup with a 5W HD LS in a reflector and dual refracting lenses to collect and kaleida-focus that light...

It is a nice spot. I was playing with it again a while ago. The spot is about 3 ft. wide, @ 50 ft. You can even see the narrow laser-like beam in the air.

There is quite a bit of the collimator not exposed to the eyepiece. In the spot, the leads to the die can be seen, much like in a Brinkmann Rebel.

Perhaps another collimator, face to face with the first, or a cut-down Mini-Mag reflector would match the beam to the eyepiece lens more completely?

I tried it with my Megaclops SE, and the beam is so wide, that the result is dimmer than with the 1W luxeon. I think the only light getting to the eyepiece lens, is what is coming from the small reflector cone on the SE.

I was playong with this again tonight.
This time, I put an arc AAA LE up to it, and the throw is pretty impressive.

While looking straight ahead, and shining it into my face from an angle, it seems about as bright as my MadMax+ R2H does when doing the same thing.

I tried a binocular lens on one of the ls's, but it took away almost all the light. Perhaps it's time to revisit the idea.

Hah, this is neat. I have one of the $10 countycomm monoculars and it works great. The rubber around the eyepiece fits the MM head pretty nicely, though not tight enough to keep it on by itself. It's not bright, but it's got lots of throw. With a McFlood, you get a very interesting beam.
