My First Surefire.

Hi,

I have just brought my first Surefire. I went with the 6P Original for work.

I work as a Bouncer (Hotel and Pub Security) and I was looking for a torch that was as bright as a 4 D cell Mag Lite but could also fit on a belt.

I live in Australia and we dont get much of a selection over here. This seemed to be the best choice for my needs.

So I was wondering what are some of the best accessories I can get for my torch? and where can I get them. I dont mind if I have to import them.

Firstly I would suggest getting a spare lamp assembly, as well as a reasonable supply of SF123 batteries for it. You can get the Surefire SC1 spares carrier (see web link below) to carry the spare lamp as well as 6 batteries. There are two lamps available for the 6p, the P60 that is installed from the factory (65 lumens), and the P61 that puts out 120 lumens of light. I only ever use the P61 in my G2z, however as you will probably be using your light on a regular basis, the 60 minutes output per battery set might be wise as compared with 20 minutes with the P61...

Another option is to go to Big W (Australia's Walmart equivelent) and buy a 'waterproof match holder' from the camping section, which for $1.94 or so AUD fits two SF123's perfectly /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif


There are three Surefire brand holsters you can buy:
The V70 speed holster
The V20 fixed loop
The V21 quick detach

As the 6p is the 'original' and very popular, a plethora of after market holsters are available for it. There is a holster that I have seen in the shops that I think has been made by Accusport on the Gold Coast. You can also get a custom holster made from places such as Platypus Outdoors in Melbourne (also Blackhawk and SOE in the US), as well as Uncle Mikes Brand, GK and others that I don't know of.

However before you jump in and buy any 'gucci kit' for your 6p you need to consider your requirements and situation (i.e. in your case for security)

These are things that I can think of from the top of my head:

* Light retention - You want to keep a hold of your light whether it is in your hand or in your holster / pocket. This means choosing an appropriate holster that will retain your light during times of 'aggressive negotiation /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rant.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twakfl.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif' or simply when participating in a typical crowd environment.

* How often do you intend to use the light? In Australia, using this light for general use will be an expensive proposition with lithium batteries: will you use it to check id's or 'dark' areas (I'm just using these as examples...)?

* Light Retention (again /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) you don't want to lose that great (not to mention expensive) light /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, not only when holstered, but if you have it in your hand when or if the poop hits the fan /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

* Force options: do you intend to integrate the 6p into your use of force continuum (probably not but still...)? If you do, thoroughly think it out, experiment with reactions (from both intoxicated and sober persons) to the light, and figure out a way to keep a hold of it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif whilst carrying out your other duties /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif (see aggressive negotiations above /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). A conversation with management etc about this might also be in order /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

These are just afew points that I can think of to consider for your particular situation. Hopefully i've been of help /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, and at the least given you some food for thought about accessories and your new 6p...

Yes it is my only SureFire but I love it. SO bright so powerful.

I used to carry a AA mini maglite but they are just not bright enough.

Yes i need a good holster for my torch. I was looking at the V20 (fixed loop) as that cant be ripped off of my belt.

I'm not sure if it'll be legal in Aussieland, and also if there is such a thing for the 6P, but maybe a GG&G TID (Tactical Impact Device)? Or is that made only for the Executive series?

I'm curious, all of you that said the 6P was your favorite Surefire, why is that?

Did you consider the C2, Z2, M2, G2, G2Z or E2e? If you did consider the others what made you say no to them?

The reason i said that the SureFire 6P was my favourite torch is because i had a choice of the 6P or the G2 Nitrolon. In Australia the SureFire supply is extremely limited and it sucks but atleast i can get them /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Also the next SureFire i want is the E2D Defender as it would have great uses at work.

So yeah i hope thats all the questions.

Here are some more accessories that will work with your 6P. I have these and they make the 6P very versatile.

F24 slip-on, flip-up Beamshaper (diffuses the light for close up work and flooding the immediate area)

F26 slip-on, flip-up Red Filter (great for preserving night vision)

Z21 closed-end tailcap with lanyard ring (twist on and off, and waterproofing)

Z33 Lanyard ring and Lanyard (ring goes between tailcap and body)

SC1 Spares Carrier (waterproof, dustproof, and portable protection for a spare Lamp Assembly and 6 CR123A cells)

Z49 Black anodized clickie tailcap switch.

Several individuals and dealers who are members of CPF sell these items. Member jcciv is an excellent source for all of these.

PS: I forgot to mention the A19 cell extender which converts your 6P to a 9P (9 volt) with the addition of an extra CR123A. Then you can use the P90 or P91 Lamp Assemblies (ummm, best to use only if your lens is glass).

I just like the looks. In terms of functionality, you could say the 6P is lacking since it is not a very specialized flashlight eg: combat.

This is all new to me and I need all the help i can get.
In regards to modding my torch that is very cool.
I would love to get them it is just a matter of getting them to Australia because no matter where I look no one stocks them readily in my state atleast anyway.

So in regards to getting parts it would be great appreciated for any help in that field.

Now what would you recommend for my next torch (for use with my job as a pub/hotel security guard. I ask drunks to politly to leave /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif and so on and so forth)

I am in need of any and all advice on surefires also.

Your next torch? Hmmmmm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif I think I would recommend the SF L6. Might as well step up to a 9V 5w Luxeon LED. The body is about the same as the M3's and you could clobber....er uh /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif....I mean you could persuade with it if you needed to.

You can carry it in your jacket pocket or on your belt in a sheath and it is "just" a flashlight, though it looks like some kind of cattle prod/baton thingie.

My personal favorite stock Surefire light is the M3T.

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! Numerous Newbies and SureFires, oh my!

Newbies aren't allowed to have any SF's until thoroughly inspected by a more senior CPF member who doesn't own one. I'll PM my address to you guys so you can send them my way for an extended test. This is a new rule that isn't in the FAQ's yet so don't bother to check.

Just in case I break down and warm up my plastic - does the E2e have a similar switch action to the Scorpion? What do you guys like the best for an under $100 SF as that's my limit for now.

Oh yeah, one more thing...WELCOME TO THE CPF.

I'd recommend a G2Z in black. Tough as a mule, combatlight grip, and the guts of the venerable 6P.

If you really want one with the aluminum body, and I wouldn't blame ya, how about an HA III C2?

For pocket carry, the E2e. Then you can always upgrade it with a KL4 5w LED head, or better still, a McLux PR-T Lux III at 917ma.

311, Thanks for those suggestions. I'm looking for some versatility, so it's nice to know that the KL's fit too. Are those the same KL's fit the Scorpion? Since I've already got a Scorp, I want something smaller and the G2 & 6P seem close to what I've got.

Now to collect some funds on a "sneak-a-little-away-at-time basis". This will give me ample time to decide. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
