haha. i thought i was nuts. i am so glad to see there are other folks like me! getting two of each. unfortunatly i am not so rich. so usually my "duty" lights are the cheap ones and the good ones get used when they are not likely to get scratched. if i could afford two of every surefire and streamlight i would not hesitate to do so.
also, i am so glad to hear that these 6v. box batts. last a decade! another great reason to love these. i thought alkalines die in a year or so. i guess the box batt. is different. it would be amazing if some company made a 6v. lantern for flashaholics. more compact and top notch beam.
although the eveready is probably as compact as that batt. allowes.

Guys, I have a 1918 Eveready in my collection THAT STILL WORKS. (pitiful beam, though), and is one of my faves'. But you just can't beat an LED light when you need one in your pocket... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif

I'm glad that you think 6v lanterns are useful, but maybe the "box batt" doesn't last ten years. It's still alkaline remember.
About 6v lanterns, I've had some bad experiences with a $4 dorcy lantern. It looked very good when it arrived home, but with some scratches in the lens. Compared to 2d lights, it was plenty bright, but not as bright as desired. The bulb was a plain vacuum 4.8v .5A bulb that blackened over time. On the second battery, (the first was included--a cheap "heavy duty") the bulb gave out. Frustrated, I cracked the lens by stabbing it with a pair of scissors. I did not care to get a new bulb but proceeded to drop test it without batteries. The bezel assembly cracked.

I have an old lantern that I use often. Main reason is because I can position it in any direction I need. But let me add this to the discussion. I used to be the type of person who would buy a nice gun for instance and be afraid to use it very often. You know what I mean. Afraid to get it scratched up and all. I was just like my Father about these things. Then my Father died in 1999 and I realized that most of the guns he had bought were wasted. He really never let himself enjoy them the way they were made to be enjoyed. So now if I buy it I use it and enjoy it no matter if it is a flashlight or anything else. Believe me if you do not enjoy your toys while your alive someone else will one day.
I have one of those Everready 6V lanterns from 1989. Original HPR50 bulb. Nice cheap durable light.
As for other less-expensive flashlights: My most-used house light is probably a Makita 12V. It's bright and has an adjustable head, shares batteries with my little drill, and I got it cheap off eBay. Also have a Mag 6D as my walking-at-night anti-dog flashlight. Plus a few small, cheap lights to keep around the house.
I'm just as much as a Surefire/Arc/Streamlight/etc fan as anyone, but cheap lights do have their purpose. I can't afford wrecking or losing a big $$ light on some rough task. The fancy ones get used in normal situations.
