A month or two ago I purchased two CMG infinities. One for me and my wife. The CMG is a cool light and my wife uses it to read every night. She thinks its cool that she hardly ever has to change batteries and the bulb does not burn out. She reads alot and goes thru a few bulbs a year.

I wanted a light to carry with me (I live near NYC and go in the subway sometimes), so I ordered an ARC AAA and a PHOTON II. The ARC was for me and the PHOTON was to be for my wife so she would not get too flustered about all these flashlights coming into the house (The plan worked too!).

Now don't get me wrong the ARC is a nice light and will out last the PHOTON big time and I am happy I bought it but...

The dam PHOTON is brighter than the ARC! Did I cheat myself or what? How long does the PHOTON stay that bright?

The arc will remain bright longer than the photon because it' regulated. Also the arc' batteries are cheaper. So in other words you won't feel cheated after about ten minutes of batterie use on that photon!

You won't regret it a second and then you'll have to an arc ls! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif

I must admit I have become a flashasholic. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon23.gif I am already trying to figure out what my next light will be.

Pretty pathetic really!

My wife could really use a Opalec new beam for reading. She says that the CMG light is not bright enough. I could use the photon head lamp for camping and as a back up light for riding my bike at night.

I guess this never ends! Eh? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

The opalec is awesome. I modded a small waterproof flashlight to fit the opalec and I love it. I also have a photon fusion for sale if your interested.

Do you have a CMG Infinity or Ultra?

If it is not the Ultra then get her a CMG Ultra for about $15, it is quite a bit brigher than the CMG Infinity and uses the same AA Battery. You can make it even brighter if you're willing to pay for a Lithium AA battery [$2 - $5 each, depending where you buy it].

your wife has the regular infinity--not the ultra?

if so, i think you can scrape off the black dot on the head of the light--i guess it brightens it up quite a bit.

personally, i would think that the opalec would be too bright for reading...i also find the infinity ultra to be a bit bright. the hotspot is pretty powerful.

2 excellent lights for reading at night are the palight selector or onestar (with the lens removed) and the energizer 2 led folding light.

the palights have adjustable brightness and the energizer (currently my favorite for reading) puts out a wonderful flourescent-like glow--without hotspots. it is pretty bright--and inexpensive!

take care,
Bob

Sorry, I should have said the CMG is an Ultra. Thanks for the info. The Palight does look very nice for the price.

Blademan - Sorry. I prefer to buy my things new. Its kinda part of the fun. Taking it out of the shrink wrap and all.

My purchases will have to wait for a while so my wife does not think I am too nuts.

Someone once said "Run them both for 15 minutes. That'll fix the problem". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So in other words, the Photon will run brighter until the tiny batteries start to give out. That only takes a very short time. The Photon is great for short term use (like 5-30 seconds at a time) but it doesn't do well running for an hour or so.
