My torch project

This is my first ever torch project it is a complete scratch build.

I started the head today will cut the thread tomorrow then work on the body, i hope to have the body ready for the pattern soon but will have to buy a rotating table

This is the patern i want to use

First big question any body know a suitable led for me I want something that will run on 2 AA batteries or a single 9v or 3 AA something which is bright but not greedy on power and available in the uk??

And a 9v battery or will it need a resistor before it goes to the driver?? And does it need heat sinking??

Can you give us an idea of how large the body is going to be ?


You need to use a LED worthy of that gorgeous battery tube
Something like a Cree XPG
BTW you link is not working

If I need LEDs as soon as possible, I'll order them from Germany
otherwise Cutter in Australia. There is also suppliers based in Hong Kong
for cheap and cheerful components but mind you, what you pay for is
what you get

Hi mtt.tr and welcome to the forum. :welcome:

It's always a good idea to search the jeers section of the marketplace before using a new vendor?

TX101 has highlighted a couple of good online shops, and there are a few members that sell LED's in the marketplace too.

You would be best to use an electonic driver between the battery and LED. There is a good list of drivers here

You may want to think about how many and what type of batteries you want to use before going any further. Then pick a driver type, LED and reflector (or optic) to suit.

What are you going to use the torch for?

It sounds like a fun project, I only wish I had access to a lathe and mill!

well did a wee bit of machining only basic bits

that bit is only the on off.

Next job get a switch make it work! Then the rest will be done when im paid.

If your going to run the light on 2 x AA batts, then some sort of multi level
boost driver

If you want it really bright, then look at rechargeable li-ion batts

I wouldn't trust him, for a start his profile says "London" and now he claims he lives in Essex?

I agree with you TX101, but looking at Mr mtt.tr posts above he appears to want to buy in the UK, correst mtt.tr ?

mtt.tr - have you picked a driver yet? What and how many batts do you plan to use?

YOu need to make a plan man, maybe keep itsimple for your first torch.
As TX101 suggested
LED = Cree XPG
2 AA batts........

and how about a Micropuck boost driver say the SHO version that gives 500mA to the LED. Although a simple one level driver, it can't go wrong and will last for ever.

Just an idea.

BTW mtt.tr how big is your lathe......
