NOTE: This review has been updated because I received a replacement flashlight from JSBurly's, since the original one was defective. Please jump forward to this new review by clicking HERE.

Just received my Huntlight AAA Seoul flashlight from JSBurly's today.

There aren't too many sales pictures or reviews of this light, so I'm going to create one.

Let it be said up front that I am relatively picky about my flashlights. However, I've bought many Fenix, Ultrafire, etc. lights that are "Chinese" and from the equivalent or lower market segment. I've modded many of them, and I've become famliar with what it takes to do it right.

Also, let it be known I have bought 2 Huntlight FT-01 (2xCR123A) family flashlights, both very well made and respectable brightness vs. runtime.

After opening the package, I felt that I was looking at two flashlights pieced together. The head and it's knurling is very square in it's design. It's also darker. The tail is very curvy, and is lighter in color. I wish that the whole flashlight followed the theme of the tail.

The next thing that I noticed is that the orange o-ring was partially squished out from the head. You can see it in the picture below.

When I turned it on, the color and beam were nice, but the flashlight was dim. So I replaced the alkaline with a fresh lithium AAA, still dim.

When replacing the battery, I found that the o-ring that I noticed being squished is actually deteriorating already.

I also noticed circumferential stress cracks in the anodizing, all around the mid-section.

So I pulled out my arsenal of AAA flashlights. The one that I found closest in brightness is the E1 I modded with a Seoul P4-U. So I will compare them below. In all pictures, the Huntlight is on the left, the E1-SSC on the right.

Poorly centered emitter (more cosmetic than functional):

Both flashlights have fresh AAA Energizer Lithium e^2 cells.

My final thought: Runtime. I have yet to do current measurements, but according to published runtime for the Huntlight and a modified E1 (E1-47), the Huntlight has about half the runtime.

Overall, I'm disappointed. The E1 cost me about $30 to make, and it's a much better flashlight.

I certainly wouldn't say the Huntlight is a bad flashlight, but it certainly doesn't measure up to other AAA flashlights in this price range, based on this one sample I have. Especially not after receiving fantastic quality FT-01's in the past.

Counterpoints welcome. Anybody having better brightness or quality than I got?

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

interesting.. according to chevrofreak's runtime, the huntlight aaa has a little over 2 hour runtime on full regulation. are you saying that the fenix e1 (which seems brighter in your picture) has 4 hour runtime? that would be pretty impressive.

The o-ring problem has kept me away from purchasing any further Hunt Light's. I thought they would have solved the problem by now.

Try 5 hours with the E1. :)

Let me mention I also received the new AA Seoul Huntlight. I might do a review separately. It will be much more positive. The emitter is centered well, the light output is competitive with other 1-AA lights, and the componentry content is better. Also, the o-rings are not shredding anywhere near what the AAA does. The only downside is the THREE-tone finish with glossy blemishes on the head :ohgeez:

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

5 hours, nice.. how many lumens would you estimate are coming out of your e1?

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

I've estimated about 20 lumens, but now that I've seen it beside a Huntlight that is rated around 30 I have to wonder. Is my Huntlight dim, or is my E1 brighter than I expected?

Here's a comparison with the L0D-CE, both on e^2 lithium AAA's. The specs on the brightness of the L0D-CE is 50/20/7.5 lumens. My eyes tell me that my Huntlight isn't as bright as a L0D-CE on medium, which means it's less than 20 lumens.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

EngrPaul, your FTA3 must be a dud, looking at Chevro's output numbers the LOD CE low should not be near the output of the FTA3. The LOD CE medium should also be less bright than FTA3. Have you tried to clean the contacts?

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

Yes, the contacts are all very clean. The light output is stable, it isn't varying.

Which brings to mind the fact that the battery terminal board is very loose. When I take a swab with alcohol around the board to clean it, it lifts up in the air and at an angle.

Is this all bad? Not if you want to disassemble the light and access the board.

But I question how reliable a loose board would be over time, since the wires attached to it on the back side will be fatigued from the movement.

The good thing about the (-) terminal in the battery tube is that it fits very tight. It doesn't shift around like the other brands. Also, the threads of the twisty are smooth. Those are a couple plusses.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

Interesting ... I have the original Huntlight FT-A3 (lux I), and noticed many similar problems compared to the Fenix L0P (its direct comparable).

Although output is comparable, runtime is about half that of my L0P (i.e. under 30mins for the FT-A3, compared to nearly 60 for the L0P). Anodizing shows similar mis-match on various portions. However, my black o-ring in the head is still intact and hasn't frayed.

Still a good rugged light - I edc'ed it for several months until the L0P droped in price. It's on my list of lights to get a seoul upgrade. :)

Keep up the good work EngrPaul.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

It is normal for HA Nat anodizing to mismatch. Just look at Surefires.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

I agree that some degree of mismatch is to be expected. My comment about the Huntlight AAA is as much a style difference as it is a color difference. The tail is very unique, if the head followed the same theme it would be a beautiful flashlight.

There are a few workmanship and performance issues that make me question the value of this flashlight, since it has a slight premium in price. The style-over-function o-ring is a bad call in my opinion.

However, I consider the stress-cracked anodizing a "defect" on my flashlight. This is unacceptable in a flashlight at any price.

FYI, the original FT-A3 had a more consistent style, which I always liked. The knurling on the head was added on later models to improve grip. Here's where I bought mine - still has the original photos:

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

Personally, I would consider any gross mismatch in color, such as shown in this thread, as unacceptable in anything other than a $10 flashlight.

The led module on my FT-03 1 Watt R Bin is the same way. The board that makes contact with the battery moves around. I have debris in my reflector I would like to remove but how do you remove the board?

I had the stress cracking in my VB-16. Waion said this is caused by too much anodize coating.

I agree the preminum price you pay should not have the stress cracks and the o-ring problems.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

Thanks for the very nice review and pics.
Looking forward to your AA seoul Huntlight review! Btw, is it single mode? Have a vague recollection in the back of my head that it is, would be nice to know.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

The Huntlight AA is a single-mode tail clicky. I'm impressed with the quality of the AA light, with the exception of the more-than-usual shade variation between parts.

It uses those same orange o-rings, but the fit is smoother... and since you only roll across the o-rings when changing the battery, they will probably last just fine.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

The Fenix E1 was about 11-12 lumens, and the U bin LuxIII modded one was about 11. From what I've seen the switch to a Seoul P4 or Cree XR-E almost exactly doubles the light output of a T bin Luxeon III at the same current, so I'd guess that your E1 with P4 is at the very most 20-22 lumens. If your Huntlight isn't as bright then there seems to be something wrong with it and I would recomend exchanging it.

From what I've seen the original Huntlight is actually brighter than the L0P by up to 50%. You should try running it on a 10440 Li-Ion, you will get a bit more brightness and a regulated light output.

From what I understand Huntlight had been sending the parts out in different batches for anodize which resulted in each batch having different tint to the anodize. I believe they intend to stop doing this.

Anodize tint variations are quite common though, have a look at pretty much any natural color Surefire.

Re: My impression of the Huntlight FT-04XJA3, or Lack Thereof (AAA Seoul)

Thanks Chevrofreak. As usual, Jon is very reponsive and understanding. He is sending out another light. I shall post my updated impressions after I receive it. Hopefully I just got an oddball light. It happens.
