What are the effects of the 3 n cell mini mag mod on the led and the batteries, if you did not use the resistor. Led rated at 3.6-4.0 volts. Will 4.5 volts kill the led? If the led is capable of handling the 4.5 volts what effect does this have on the battery life?

One AAA and two N cells will fit in the body of the mini mag and the AA brinkmann. I do not know the effects of combining two different cel types.

I've been running a miniMag mod with 1 AAA and 2 N cells, no resistor for more than a year off and on. Works great using a Nichia 5mm. LED seems fine, but being overdriven maybe it won't last quite as long ... still probably longer than I can use it in my lifetime.

Do the mod. Works great.

I have to leave a technical response about battery life, effects to LED to someone else. I just know it works and the batteries just seem to keep on keepin' on.

That's good news. This gives me one of the things that I have been looking for. A led flashlight under $10. I have a rayovac industrial 2AA that uses the bi-pin bulb and faceted reflector. $3.99 at Walmart. It puts out a nice pattern with the less than bright R.S. led that I bought for testing purposes.I have 5600 mcd white leds on the way for $2.99 each.
