neck muscles?

How can you exercise your neck muscles, to make them stronger and thus more capable of protecting you from injury during sports etc? Anyone know?
 
There was a movie back in the 80s where Chris Penn wore a football helmet that had a barbell plate post mounted to the top.......:p
Hold a small barbell in each hand and do shoulder rolls, kinda like a shrug. Do sets CW & CCW.
 
Wrestlers do a lot of neck exercises. We used to arch backwards in kind of a crab position with arms and legs on the ground and stomach facing the sky, then rest on your head on a mat removing arms and do kind of pushups with your neck. Be careful with neck exercises, especially in the beginning. It's easy to hurt them.

While seated, keep your eyes foward shoulders back and tuck your chin. For some of us you can say just make a double chin. You can do lots of reps while working on your PC, reading CPF, driving, etc. Very little chance or hurting yourself with this too.

Shoulder shrugs usings dumbells is another good way.
