Hello everyone,
I recently received a Magellan Explorist 210 GPS receiver as a company gift. I was excited, as I had been considering purchasing a GPS unit for myself this holiday season. Anyway, as I've been learning, the 210 is a pretty entry-level model. That's not so much of an issue to me, as much as the fact that it only has basemaps loaded onto it. The frustrating thing to me is, in order to get any of the other maps like topo or driving, you have to buy them from Magellan (or other sources) for the same cost as a new 210! Without more than a basemap, this receiver is barely useful to me.
This frustrates me, as I now need to decide to sink more funds into this beginner unit by purchasing more maps, or decide if I should save up and by my original intention of a Garmin 60Csx? I would assume you need to buy maps for that, too?
I'm new to GPS, but am excited about geocaching and using it for outdoor hiking, and general road travelling. I am not looking for a dashboard unit for my vehicle. I prefer a handheld that can be used in multiple situations.
Any experiences or recommendations would be welcome! Also, does anyone have experience with the Sirf chip that comes with the Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 bundle? That entire package costs less than a map package for the 210, although requires using a laptop to read the maps.
