I've got a 6P with a DX 6090 dropin that's too throwy.

Well, last night I got to thinking about looking into any potential way to make it a very floody light, cheaply.

After looking around I've changed my question to try and find an optic to use. So far I'm having very little luck.

I do believe the dropin uses a Cree P4 if that helps.

Re: Can a 6P flood like an L4?

Just open up the reflector a little bit and put an SSC P4 in there... that´ll make a floody beam. I have made several and they are real nice with a big hotspot and a relatively gradient spill...

Re: Can a 6P flood like an L4?

Some kind of diffusion film applied to the lens is probably cheapest and most effective. Different types are mentioned in various threads.

Meh too cheap.

Would an optic work to give me basically a very very large hotspot? Like what the E2DL/LX2/E1B optic does but on a much larger scale.

Re: Can a 6P flood like an L4?

You should look at the Malkoff M60F then. It uses optics to make a wide flood.

Too expensive :)

I'm looking to spend a little time and not a lot of money if it's possible.

After looking around I'm trying to figure out how to put an optic on this LED.

If you search for 'optics' on a certain infamous China retailer you may find just what you are looking for.

I've been looking for an optic forever but haven't had any luck. I think I'm in way over my head at this point.

Re: Can a 6P flood like an L4?

A couple other ideas:

- Unscrewing the reflector a bit to move the LED away from the focal point might get you a slightly different beam (if it's not horribly ugly.) If you find a point you like some thread locker can hold it in place.

- An emitter swap for an SSC P4 or XP-G should get you floodier because of the different radiation patterns.

- It's already an OP reflector but you could try a little hairspray sputtering to see if it gets you closer to the beam you want.

- Maybe a combination of an emitter swap, reflector adjustment, and sputtering.

- An optic that maintains fit is not that easy. If you can find a suitable optic this thread might give you some ideas for a DIY Malkoff like mod.

- Not really a mod but the SF diffusor add-on is cheaper than switching to the M60F.

I appreciate the info. I've realized that it would be far out of my modding capabilities to make my 6P resemble anything close to an L4.

Maybe I should just buy one ;)

get one of these only 8.25 plus shipping with LDF:

28.6mm

SureFire 6P & 9P (NOTE!)
JETBeam Jet-III-M (NOTE!)

and add this

Add LDF? (Light Diffusion Film)*
LDF stands for "Light Diffusion Film." We take GE brand Lexan® that has a slight texture to it and, using an optical adhesive, apply it to one side of the lens. This results in more of a flood-like beam pattern. It will smooth out the worst beam. The overall light output is almost unchanged - it’s just spread out more. Be warned though, this coating will kill the throw of the light. Only add this coating if you like a really smooth beam and lots of side-spill. We recommend placing the LDF side of the lens toward the bulb for protection against scratching.

Diffusion Lens Comparison

NOTE: LDF does not hold up very well in UV light applications.
No thanks.
Add LDF to my lens - $3.00

Hi Search,

Here is one option, I have not used this particular optic, but it should fit into the head of your 6p without too much work as it is 25mm and if I am not mistaken the 6p dropins are 26mm. Here is another that is a bit smaller buy doesn't have the white housing on it and it has decent reviews.

This is just a guess because I am not clear on the whole beam angle thing yet, but I think the first optic will give a lager flood beam as it claims a 30 degree angle, and the beam shots given on the second appear to measure 21-15 degrees on the scale.
