I'm looking for a drop in to be mounted on a shotgun powered by rcr123x1-2 or a 18650. It going in a Solarforce L2M. It'll be used indoors for clearing. 1 mode is preferred.

They are dropin build by Malkoff.
The M61 & M91 have different voltage range & emitters.

"F" stands for flood.
They have other variant, like "Sho" for high output.
"L" for lower output
219 for Nichia emitter..

Etc etc etc..

The F designation was only on the older but still excellent in their own right M60 dropins. Those used a clear polymer optic instead of a reflector and are still available from a few vendors in a spot M60 or flood M60F and put out around 200+ lumens. The M61 is the successor and uses a newer XP-G2 led at 325 lumens, this model uses a reflector and there is no spot or flood variant, the reflector used provides a smooth narrow flood beam that throws almost as far as the older M60 spot due to the higher output. The M91 uses an XM-L emitter around 600 lumens and the same reflector as the M61, because of the larger LED the result is a very broad flood with high output. The M91A is the successor to the M91, the changes are a higher power driver and the next gen XM-L2 LED at 800 lumens.


I'd recommend the M61 for this, or if you want a warm white tint that looks like a surefire incan instead of the bluer tint most LEDs have the M61W .

Edit: I should add that the M61 is versatile and works great with any battery configuration you can stuff into a 2xCR123/1x18650 light. The M91/A work best on 2x IMR 18340's or 3-4 CR123 primaries. With the solarforce host you'll probably need some copper tape or aluminum foil wrapped around the Malkoffs for the best fit as they were designed specifically for the machining in a surefire light and have no outer spring which the solarforce hosts are designed around. Foil/copper tape has the side effect of giving better heatsinking for the dropin and ensuring reliable electrical contact even if the head of the light is a bit loose.

A M61 should be up to 9V, it can take up to 3 primary batteries or 2 rechargeables.
It uses a XP-G2 with a reflector & has a pretty decent throw with smooth transition between the hotspot & spill.

For ur requirement, I think u shud just go for the M61 SHO.. Run it with 1 x 18650 or 2 x 16340/18350.

And u will definitely need to use alu tape/foil to wrap your dropin to ensure that it is snug/tight fit with your host so that there wont be any movement inside the flashlight when you shoot.

The M61 with the Nichia 219 has slightly lower light output but a fantastic tint, if such is important to you. It's also slightly floodier than my other lights. I don't have a M61 with Cree emitter to compare, so I can't say whether the "regular" M61s are also slightly floodier or if that is a result of using the Nichia emitter in a reflector originally designed for a Cree. I'm running it on 2x RCR123As, but it should work on a single 17670 or 18650 but with slightly lower output, and it'll drop out of regulation after a while.

I'm using the M61L (low output) 219; it seems to be comparable to or even maybe slightly brighter than a Surefire P60, just for reference (when selecting light levels.)

It will be used indoors for clearing rooms of what size? Standard homes/apartments, office buildings, warehouses, airport hangars?

Naturally, the larger the space, the more lumens will be needed to sufficiently illuminate it. Are you part of a team or working as an individual?

It will be for my own house in self defense situations (hope to never need it). My Fenix LD22 215 lumens seems like a good amount to work with, its just to throwy. I walked through the house with my Fenix HL10 and that floodiness is ideal, just need more lumens.

So now I have the m61 to mull over, are there any cheaper comparable units?

You can build up one yourself, if you have a good soldering iron and some skills. Several places offer the components. Heck, I just made a circuit board a couple days ago for my glovebox light. I had a 5-mode 105c board which ended up being too cumbersome. Built it to be direct drive, now everyone's happy.

NailBender/Customlites and Vinhnguyen54 both make awesome P60 drop-ins, to your specifications, at prices a bit lower than you can usually find a Malkoff.
Personally, I'd go Malkoff on a firearm because it's such a proven design. But I have no qualms about the quality of the products put out by those two - and have a number of each.
The nice thing is they also can supply springs and tape to make it properly fit your SolarForce - with a Malkoff, you'll need to source those yourself.
They also tend to be a bit lighter in weight. Probably not a big deal on a shotgun, but I notice it in my jacket pocket.

If the floodiness of the HL10 works well, then a Malkoff M60F should be right up your alley. It gives a large, equally lit spot of light.

I agree with DellSuperman. I've got his XM-L2 and XP-G2 with OP reflectors. The XM-L2, when driven at 3 amps at 6 volts, is an outstanding room lighter.

As long as you use the included large spring in the Solarforce host, you should be good to go. I've tried the XM-L2 in my C2, but can't get 100% reliability, so I've moved it to my L2P.
