Hello,

I'm asking here, since there may be more info on automotive HID bulb specs here. It's not for a car though.

I am going to do a mod involving a 35 watt car HID ballast and a HID bulb. The bulb is going into a modified flashlight host. What I don't know and haven't seen so far, is which might be the best style bulb to use.

Mounting needs to be easy as possible and I don't even know which might be the shortest bulb. From what I can gather the following bulbs are single bulbs; H1, H3, H7, H9, H11, 880/881, 9005/9006. If those are all single bulbs, then I'm looking for one that would have the smallest diameter base, straight leads and fairly easy to come up with a mount for a modified aluminum reflector. The reflector is up in the air, but I'm looking at 105mm diameter and 70-100mm depth. The hole for the bulb would be made correctly to fit the bulb.

There's no one locally that has any HID stuff, so I can't go look and so far all I'm seeing is photos with no specs on these bulbs.

Anyone have any good suggestions for where I can see the dimensions of the bulbs and mounts? That would be appreciated and if anyone has any suggestions of which bulb style seems better?

Would it be better to scrounge an old housing from a car and cut out the mount, or take apart the bulb and re-seat it into something else?

Any thoughts are appreciated and I hope there's enough info, but if you need more........... just ask.

Thanks,
Justin

Look for H3C, those don't have a return wire. Most of the bulbs look just like standard d2s bulbs except with different plastic bases and different heights, so it will depend on your reflector.

Not exactly sure what hot-linking is, so if this is hot-linking, please tell me and I will remove the link, but here is what an H3C looks like:

to find what kind of base you want to use, just go to an auto parts store and look at all of the headlight bulbs until you find one with the base and focal length that you want, they buy a HID kit with that bulb base

Thanks,

I will look at the auto parts stores. Since it's a sxratch build and there's no reflector till it's made, I can just look at the halogens and pick a base. I should have thought of that myself. :ohgeez:
