I am posting this question in this thread because I believe jtice will also be interested...
I recently added a Luxeon III (bin SVOK) to one of Elektrolumen's Blaster Jr.'s. Since I didn't notice a significant increase in light, I then removed the resistor, making it direct-drive. This achieved a very noticeable and significant increase in brightness. Of course, being a flashoholic, I had to convert the original 3-to-D power source to a 2 X 123 as soon as I read Elektrolumen's "Blaster Jr. On Steroids" description. The amount of light produced at this point was absolutely AWESOME!
Up until now, I have only run this light for brief periods of time (probably a minute, or less), and the LED has been giving a very bright and white color (no visible trace of the "angry blue"). Being worried that I might be overstressing the Luxoen III, I then added a 2.7 ohm resistor to the circuit. The 2.7 ohms, however, just took too much away from the brightness I was getting from the direct-drive. I then found a 1 ohm resistor that I had liberated from a previous Blaster II (there were two of these connected in series). After substituting the 1 ohm for the 2.7 ohm, I am very happy with the light output. It is very, very close to what I get with direct-drive.
Having said all this, can anyone attempt to speculate what the ma's might be? In brief, if I continue to run this light this way, should I go ahead and prepare an envelope for DougS (to send a dead Lux to)? Or might this Luxeon be spared a sudden and early demise? With the outstanding heatsinking of the Blaster series, is only 1 ohm resistance enough?
