i recieved a nordic flexshaft light from cpfer gene, as a bonus in a transactoin. what a great guy! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
he sent it to me to see what i could do with it.
i decided that since it has a shaft, it would probably be used mostly for things such as reading at night, or fixing the sink, or trying to figure out what that strange "clunk" is whenever i turn my car...so i would want something with a long runtime, and soft illumination.
i decided that a micropuck would fit the bill well (and i had one on stock...), and a batwing q3j emitter would provide a more even beam pattern, better tuned to closeup work (i also had one of these on stock...).
here is the heatsink:
the heatsink goes into the head of the light, which i bored out a little bit:
here is the switch, which was cut down to allow room for the micropuck, and a blob of titanium epoxy was added to make the switch a little easier to press:
here is the micropuck, i wraped the ground wires around it a couple times to boost the grounding, as it presses up firmly againt the side of the light and the bottom of the heatsink. it is also grounded out at the top on the heatsink:
here is the switch and micropuck setup, before soldered and isolated:
this picture was taken before everything was soldered. afterwards, i used my new favorite stuff to insulate the postive and negative wires...nailpolish! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
i also used some electrical tape just to be sure...
here it is with everthing epoxied in place:

the nailpolish was used to ensure the positive lead of the led didn't ground out, as the led was recessed in a centering hole.
the lens is a pressfit, so that was a little bit of a letdown /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
i managed to get around that however ;D
this is a picture of the optic system. the optic alone placed it too low in the head for the pressfit lens to engage tightly, so i cut the top and the bottom of the old reflector off and used it to hold the optic at the proper height. this should also help with bouncing a few of the lost photons back into the optic.

since this will primarily be a closeup light, i intend to put a mcflood in it, so i didn't take my time to pop in a perfect optic, or polish it up too well...
and here is the light after was finally completed:
the flexable shaft can either be on or off, just screw it in between the body and the switch piece.
the led looks kind of greenish in the pics, but it's actually a nice slightly blush color, which reall makes it easy on the eyes!
