I just got a Surefire A2 and I did a full run to make sure it was working. Toward the end of the run the lamp would go dim then ramp up to full brightness again for a few seconds then go dim again. About 5 minutes after that stopped the lamp stayed dim for another 10-15 minutes and shut off. Is this normal?

Some variation of that behavior is normal. When the incan starts to go out of regulation it's time to change the batteries. At that point you may still have some life to power the LEDs.

I freaked out a couple of times when my A2 started behaving erratically, but in each case I swapped in new batteries and it performed flawlessly, once again.

Yes. This is normal. Not to worry. Just flaky end-of-incan-run behavior because the voltage of the batteries under load is right at the turn-off voltage of the regulator.
