I was thinking (oh oh) what is always missing in the "how to make a light saber" threads.
and i see a difference in the expectations from the MOVIES, and what could be a reality in a few seconds.

the attempts are always to increase the output of a loose flying hunk of light , that blows off into oblivion. so increase the power of a laser about 15000 times and have plasma bursts and all this stuff, and you still dont solve the biggest problem, all the light dashes off into oblivion, as it continues on and on. (phaser, not saber)

i think the key might be to utalize what a laser already IS, the stuff gets reflected back and forth in some crystal, re-exciting itself. but once it heads OUT, its GONE by by /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif

So the answer is simple, call it a light sword, not saber for the purpose of bringing it into reality.
the design has to be a bit different so the light stays, instead of leaves.

So first you have your high powered lazer module , in your handy dandy light saber packaging, when you swing it out, the top MIRROR slides out on a telescopic rod, much like an antenna. (ahh you already know where i am going with this:-)

the mirror keeps the light from flying off into oblivion and being all wasted when it hasnt even sliced through anyones thick scull yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

keep this first design simple, later you can add the proper reflection to get a 'circle' or a number of traces of the beam , back and forth from the head to the tip of the laser sword.

the beam (or blade edge) goes out of the main crystal, and to the mirror, and BACK into the crystal, gets re-excited in the crystal, and re-sent out again. just like in the laser itself, the beam is not lost but regenerated used to excite more releaces, and doesnt get lost.
Every time it goes back to the origin, it is cranked up with more juice again. until it actually has to slice through something, when it has to slice through something, the concentration is so high, because its not LOST, that the edge can break a few molecules out at a time, without loseing its momentum.
in other words turn the whole receptacle into a whole laser, instead of just the intital module.

ok so you have a bit of alignment problems with the mirror and all, so the proper convex mirror paths not only would re-direct the light back, but could be a sort of lensing for concentration, and cover the fact that the mirror is not exactally stable hanging out there on the end of your packaging.
and if you cant perfect it that way, then use transister mirrors, like in a DLP projector, the tiny arrays of mirrors would be electronically motivated to maintain some aiming alignment, to insure the return of the light back to the origin.

The light sword. doesnt it sound more practial and feasable with the present technology? now where is my DOD grant, so i can get started on high teck electronic bayonette replacements. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

now logically speaking , the practicality of light slicing through materials, when metal would do the job as effectivly might lend itself more to brain surgery than weaponry. but the idea might allow a Modder, to turn thier reletivly low powered laser into a realistic looking light saber, instead of a 2 mile thrower, and thrill and amaze all thier friends. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif
 
I enjoy the movies, but I watch what a lightsaber DOES in them and the first thought that comes to mind is to wonder where they get all that ENERGY! If they run on 123a batts I sure hope they are rechargables or a lightsaber is going to cost you a FORTUNE to run!

was how does this blade of power go out only so far, and stop !!!

well, i have a solution /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Think of the blade not as a laser, but a force field.
You turn on the saber, and a thin rod extends out, with a small reflector at the end.
The force field goes out of the saber handle to the reflector and back.
Now you have a force feild that is surrounding the thin extended rod, so now the rod doesnt really have to be strong at all.

See, it all makes perfect sence. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

and yea, they must have small nuclear reactors in them for all that power ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
 
Going out so far and stopping isn't so tough, Plasma contained in a magnetic "bottle". We can do it now (though it takes enough energy to run a small city to do it). The problem is that in order to cut something you'd have to rupture the "bottle" and allow the plasma to contact the object. Unfortunately right now rupturing any part of a magnetic bottle makes it pop like a balloon which is pretty fatal for anyone within about 200 yards.

they have transporter technology, they just transport the light at the end back. then a few Di-Li-tritium-ion batteries and they are good to go.

mabey a smaller bottle (tube) would be more effective as a close range weapon /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif carry a few extra in your "quill".

ahh a forcefield, your already thinking ahead, the non-lethal Saber, a electronic cattle prod arcing like a substation disconnect switch without a capacitor. for crowd control. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/touche.gif they should sell like hotcakes, to every police force in america, just one look, and the perp gives up.
 
I just read, either in the book of the new movie or in a related book, which Lucas Films considers more or less the history of the franchise. (as compared to Star Trek only considering the TV and Movies as cannon). The beam is focused by a crystal. Not only does it project a fixed difference, it reflects back and returns the power to the source. In effect it only drains power while it is cutting or bashing another blade. It also evidently gathers power from either the force or some reaction in the power cell. So in effect it does not need recharging that often.

Now you have a laser blade of a fixed length with physical substance and a prepetual motion self regeneration device to boot. And you all thought Jar Jar Binks was hard to understand. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

you guys are not understanding light sabres. .
have you ever wondered why ONLY jedi can use them?
its because they use their Force to activate the light sabres.
there's no "power" supply, the light is created by the jedi's force (with the special crystal inside the handle).
That is why light sabres stop (the jedi controls the length. . like yoda's short sabre) and no one can use them except for people who know the force.

ok , now we aparentally need a Gyroscopic stablalization, and circular beam pattern.
this might be easier to accomplish (again) then what we try and envision.

the Laser is put on a counterbalanced motor shaft, the motor being in the base of the unit.
as the laser spins around the main unit, this aquires the gyroscopic effects , AND it also has the laser beam taking a circular path around the thing.
of course this would also add in the need sound effects (real ones) as the fast motor slowly wound up to its high rpm speed. (right before it all flies off:-)

at the other end of course, is the mirror which stops and reflects the laser beam back to the point of origin.

adding in a gyroscope to the tip of the 'blade" (mirror end) would just make it harder to keep the end mirror aligned, but done properly it might be utalized to maintain the same parellax aligment with the base laser. meaning not Straight, but still aimed.
