I was thinking (oh oh) what is always missing in the "how to make a light saber" threads.
and i see a difference in the expectations from the MOVIES, and what could be a reality in a few seconds.
the attempts are always to increase the output of a loose flying hunk of light , that blows off into oblivion. so increase the power of a laser about 15000 times and have plasma bursts and all this stuff, and you still dont solve the biggest problem, all the light dashes off into oblivion, as it continues on and on. (phaser, not saber)
i think the key might be to utalize what a laser already IS, the stuff gets reflected back and forth in some crystal, re-exciting itself. but once it heads OUT, its GONE by by /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink2.gif
So the answer is simple, call it a light sword, not saber for the purpose of bringing it into reality.
the design has to be a bit different so the light stays, instead of leaves.
So first you have your high powered lazer module , in your handy dandy light saber packaging, when you swing it out, the top MIRROR slides out on a telescopic rod, much like an antenna. (ahh you already know where i am going with this:-)
the mirror keeps the light from flying off into oblivion and being all wasted when it hasnt even sliced through anyones thick scull yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
keep this first design simple, later you can add the proper reflection to get a 'circle' or a number of traces of the beam , back and forth from the head to the tip of the laser sword.
the beam (or blade edge) goes out of the main crystal, and to the mirror, and BACK into the crystal, gets re-excited in the crystal, and re-sent out again. just like in the laser itself, the beam is not lost but regenerated used to excite more releaces, and doesnt get lost.
Every time it goes back to the origin, it is cranked up with more juice again. until it actually has to slice through something, when it has to slice through something, the concentration is so high, because its not LOST, that the edge can break a few molecules out at a time, without loseing its momentum.
in other words turn the whole receptacle into a whole laser, instead of just the intital module.
ok so you have a bit of alignment problems with the mirror and all, so the proper convex mirror paths not only would re-direct the light back, but could be a sort of lensing for concentration, and cover the fact that the mirror is not exactally stable hanging out there on the end of your packaging.
and if you cant perfect it that way, then use transister mirrors, like in a DLP projector, the tiny arrays of mirrors would be electronically motivated to maintain some aiming alignment, to insure the return of the light back to the origin.
The light sword. doesnt it sound more practial and feasable with the present technology? now where is my DOD grant, so i can get started on high teck electronic bayonette replacements. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
now logically speaking , the practicality of light slicing through materials, when metal would do the job as effectivly might lend itself more to brain surgery than weaponry. but the idea might allow a Modder, to turn thier reletivly low powered laser into a realistic looking light saber, instead of a 2 mile thrower, and thrill and amaze all thier friends. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif
