Novatac K2 TFFC

I have a Novatac 85 on the way and have read that the K2 can be used to replace the Seoul(?) led already in it. However, I have never done any modifications to anything electrical. Replacing a few outlets and circuit breakers is the sum total of my electrical experience.

With detailed instructions that include what not to do as well as what to do, I can usually avoid screwing the pooch. If I could get details on how to swap emitters, I'd like to give it a try. If I’m successful with the Novatac, I’d like to try other projects.

Are Inova XO3s modifiable? If so, would a K2 be a good thing to put in a XO3? Inovas don’t look like the easiest to work on, but I have a couple I don’t use and would rather gain experience (i.e. make mistakes) on these flashlights than any others I have.

While there is a fairly recent thread specifically addressing a Novatac K2 swap, it lacks some detail that I think I need to get it right. If I could find instructions that detailed how to take the Novatac apart without damaging something, and then how to swap emitters and put it all back together, I would definitely give it a shot.

I suppose it boils down to this simple question: can someone without any modding experience, electrical knowledge, or specific skills successfully swap out the stock emitter in a Novatac 85 for a K2 TFFC emitter?

If anyone is willing to share their knowledge and expertise, I'd really like to try doing some modifications. I think I will enjoy it and look forward to finding out.

Its not that difficult, in fact it is one of the most popular mods for the Novatac

If you read the thread, the OP describes himself as a non-modder :D

My tip to you is to use a decent soldering iron and thin gauge solder

EDIT .... Just re-read your post, your looking for more detailed
instructions on how to dissamble your Novatac, right
Well here goes.
Unscrew the head from the battery compartment.
To remove the front bezel, lens and reflector, what I did
was to use the sole of a running shoe. Using pressure
hold the bezel against the sole and twist. The bezel should
now unscrew. The lens and reflector can now be removed

Look at the back of the head. You will see a metal retaining ring
with 4 notches on it.
Get a pair of needle nosed pliers and insert into opposite notches
Now unscrew the retaining ring.
You can now remove the heatsink.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose the first thing I need to do is go through the entire thread and cut and paste only the informative parts to use as a reference document. A couple of quick questions: I had to look up what a VOP was to give you an idea of my present ignorance. Do I need a Multimeter to determine the positive lead? Any recommendation of soldering iron?

When I receive the light, I’ll first see if I can take it apart without any damage. If I get that far and have any practical questions, I’ll ask. But please don't hesitate to offer any advice on how to avoid any common beginner mistakes. Thanks again.
