Novatac Rubber Ring Inside Tailcap

Can anyone tell me what purpose the rubber ring inside a Novatac 120T tailcap serves? It is a thick rubberish ring that surrounds the tailcap spring. It came out but my flashlight is still working. Do I really need to glue this thing back in?

I believe that foam ring is for recoil protection when mounted as a weapon light. It keeps the battery from being disconnected or damaged when the gun is fired. You don't need it for normal operation.
