I've been reading a lot here about the QIII but not the QI. Can anybody provide a quick rundown of how they compare in terms of beam brightness and shape, and runtime?

What it seems to me is that the QI is a little less light, a little more, maybe twice as much, runtime, and a lot less cost. The QI looks like a good EDC if a person is looking for runtime.
 
I'm thinking this would make a great replacement for the E1E/KL-1 I'm giving to my sister. On the other hand I'm waiting for the Zorch from ElektroLumen to come out.

I was waiting for the QI as well. Then I found the 1W luxeon sale at Sharper image as described in this thread .

It provides most of what I was hoping the QI would provide (1W output, good white color, semi-flood beam, etc.) and it feels smaller in my hand than the QIII. Don't know about the run time yet, but if it's similar to a QI, this is a much better deal and it's here now if you live near a Sharper Image. I got 2 of them for $40 with the coupon mentioned.
 
I have both, but not long enough to measure runtime, only got them this week.
The 1 is a lot dimmer than the 3 as expected.
Distributor cost difference between the two is only about USD5 which is why I ordered a few boxes of the 3's instead of the 1's. Reduced runtime did not bother, I wanted max. brightness.

See my thread reference above for pictures, details, and coupons. It is a silver anodized light - looks like a Nuwai - about the same length as a QIII/I but with a narrower body. It has a regular (not reverse) clickie and uses 1 x 123 battery. Both mine were quite white in beam color. It comes with its own pouch, batteries, and a lanyard.

Again, all for $20 each plus sales tax.
