I've published a short step-by-step article on how to modify your Maglite with a Luxeon 3W and Hotlips heatsink for those who have yet to try this fun and very practical mod. It aims at gathering all the information a beginning modder might need in one place. I've learned a lot, hopefully I can give a little bit back.

Of course, remember that this is not endorsed by Mag, will assuredly void your warranty and should be done at your own risk, as are all third party modifications/conversions.

In the second section you have written:
"Put the metal strip back in and trim it to a shorter length. You can now solder a length of wire to it."

I think this is one place where(for a klutz like me who's never done this before) a couple of extra pictures would be really valuable. How much do we cut off? Which end? How does it go back in? What does the piece look like?
While this might be evident when the pieces are sitting in front of you, it isn't when reading the tutorial and I want to be sure I understand it 100% before I tear a light apart.

PS. What changes would have to be made to the tutorial so that I could convert a 3C cell maglite? (can you guess what I already own, huh! huh! can ya, huh!.) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

PPS. That tutorial should have a permanent place in CPF, I think it's worth it's weight in gold. I've been wanting to modify my maglite and haven't had the slightest idea of how to go about it.

Not a problem. I should have mentioned how much I enjoyed your article. It was very informative and detailed. Thanks for taking the time to write it.
 
One thing that I've found while researching for this mod is that there are different versions of the M@g body, and the Hotlips only fits the newer ones. I have two 3D cell Mags, an old black body one which doesn't have a D in the serial number has an interior diameter of 37mm, and a newer red one with a D in the serial number and has a 34mm interior diameter. The Hotlips D is designed for a 34mm, so it will only work with newer M@g bodies. I think this might be useful to add to your page as it is intended for newbies like us.

AvroArrow: good point, I've updated the cookbook to include that warning. Forgot all about it, because all of the Mags I've owned are the new versions, but it's good to note it in case someone has an older Mag that needs a new lease on life.
