oh the pain

I want you all to know the pain you are causing me. I hadn't bought many flashlights in quite some while. My favorites were the SF 6P, 9P, and Uke 2l. Then I discovered this forum, and I have bought in the last 2 weeks;
Inova X5, 2! SF E2, Maglite 2aa with Opalec Led, arc aaa, pelican L1 and arc sls. I want to buy a PT Surge. My wife will kill me. Anyway, I really enjoy reading and appreciate this board.

When I was dating my GF(now my wife), I wanted to impress her and whipped out my Uke 2l and prepared to enter a cave. I flipped on the light and blew the LA.

So I have been carrying the 2l in a scorpion pouch and have enough room to carry an extra LA at the bottom. Does anyone have a time when their flashlight let them down?

I always carry multiple flashlights since and have never been caught again.

This forum has been bad for me too <smile>.

Most things in my life are somewhat redundant or I have a scaling plan...actually the only thing that doesn't work out well in a redundant situation is a wife!

There are very few things I don't have two of from camera bodies (I don't have redundant lenses) to tape recorders to flashlights to...Chevy Suburbans!

I have rarely been let down by anything because of that policy. As to flashlights (subject of this forum) I EDC a SF E2E and Arc LE. I have as immediate backup either a MiniMag AA with Nexstar lamp and/or an Inova X5. In the car I have a 5D Mag and a Brinkmann LX as well as a 2D Swivelight.

No, but I did once start chasing a car thief who had driven into thick bush.
Dark night + no flashlight = he got away. That happened three years ago and not again since.

Oh No - A Tragedy !! Reading the topics on CPF, I thought it was just SureFire's LA's that could blow out.
Now it looks as if *ordinary* flashlights can suffer from LA failures too !!

Tarnation - I'll just have to go and lie down for a while to think about this ......

RLHESS: I thought I was the only person who does this.

I spoke to a pal of mine in the local police force, who has spent much time in foreign lands, on loan to various government institutions, and he told me the military term for what we do:

No single point of failure.

I've always liked that.

PS: you can get a backup for a wife, but it gets expensive.

mm. I was just thinking about how 'playing' with the flashlights actually lessens the odds that they will fail during an emergency...ie. if you use the light for emergencies only, there is a 100% probability it will fail, (ie. bulb will blow), during an emergency. If it is used half the time for emergency and half the time for goofing off, that means there's only a 50% chance of failure during emergency, right?

PhilAlex: RIGHT ON! No single point of failure. I spend most of my days thinking about this for my job designing high-end broadcast facilities...I like this no one ever died because of a failure in one of our systems, however, if the SuperBowl commercials fail to air someone may die <smile>.

Did I mention the SF SC1 spares carrier is also near at hand (while the E2e is in my pocket). It has a spare LA and three spare pairs of 123s for the E2e.

I'm even putting a spare LA in the cars for the Brinkmann LXs--along with a spare pair of 123s.

My wife and neighbors are quite aware of my affinity for illuminatory accutraments. Next door they recently had a problem with the dryer vent getting clogged. My wife grabs the 2d mag and rushes next door. It lights for about 10 seconds, then dims to nothing. They come back and I hand over the 3d mag, same, she grabs her 2aa mini-mag out of her glove box, not powerful enough. Hadn't changed batteries in awhile and they let me down. Finally handed over the scorpion out of my brief case and got the job done. How embarrassing.
