I like the modular design concept used in older Surefire lights. Too bad it seems like so many newer lights are moving away from modular design. Legos and custom combinations of light engines are fun!

There's no pride in most things made anymore and "Everyone wants your money"

This should remain a hobby, despite the forces against it.

I like the modular concept as well. There are some nice lights out there now but by in large they are closed construction and only allow for replacement of batteries and sometimes not even battery replacement. Along with modular light engines it is nice to have easily replaceable switches,lenses and bezel rings. It seems like the vast majority of manufacturers have abandoned that philosophy.

Surefire modularity is a mix of the technology used, cost saving design choices, and large volume of production with limited competition leading to popular aftermarket support for improved parts and squishing new tech in old platforms,

A new modular platform would need to be a sort of agreed community standard design, preferably designed with the thermal needs of LEDs taken into account. The closest thing in the custom scene is the proliferation of Mac derivative designs but interoperability is somewhat limited by everyone making small tweaks and optimizations for their application

Modularity no more possible, since new technologies bloomed like a rainforest with its diversity

Also, I think the SF modularity was a product of their target market, namely military and LEO. Needs varied for those guys so it was nice they could cobble together parts to make exactly the light they needed from different bodies, switches etc. That’s a really cool option.

Yes surefire sure did a lot of this. I loved when they started updating to leds as a upgrade. You could keep your light and just change heads.

Or drop in a P60L in place of a P60.

I would really like someone to create an updated P60L. I really like being able to screw the head all the way down and it's about the only thing that works with E-C adapters.
