Older G2... Not as bright

My G2 LED is not as bright as it use to be. It has been on my belt for about 4 years. It a little beat up, and the lens may not be that clear... But it's in good shape considering the usage. Even with fresh new batteries it is not as bright as it could be.

Any troubleshoot ideas??


Is it worth calling SureFire and seeing if they can help me out? Or do you think I should go for an aftermarket bulb.... Assuming it the bulb assembly...

I would clean all the contacts and lens. If that does not help, replace the dropin. The G2 is one of my most-used lights.

my version of the G2 LED is discontinued... Is it worth me getting the newer drop in?

The P60L module is no longer offered. New G2Ls have a whole head/electronics package called the KX4. It itself is not really designed to be disassembled, but it is easy to take one of those heads and pop it on the G2 body you have. Voila, a 120 lumen G2L. Or an aftermarket dropin is a possibility. Not really sure why yours would be suddenly dimmer though. :shrug:

Does it have to be a Surefire drop-in? I have three Surefires myself and none of them have a Surefire lamp or emitter assembly...and that's just fine with me.

Three things can be at fault here: (1) Batteries. Assuming they are OK then (2) contacts. Springs, metal contacts etc. (3) the LED is dying (unlikely as the LED should have a least 40-50,000 hours on it before it dies). Obvious ways forward: (1) Try Surfire C/S first. Give them a ring and tell them the problem. As the lights have a lifetime warranty they should have spares (including the P60L modules) for everything they've sold over the past few years. (2) buy a drop in. You have cheap and over driven stuff from China available in the US or better still get a Malkoff M60L. Option (1) nothing to loose except some coins on a telephone call. Option (2) quick and easy fix which is realatively cheap way of keeping your flashlight for another few years of good productive use. Your choice but I'd sure like to know how you get things sorted?

Contact surefire for the no-hassle warranty before stepping into another drop in
All you need to pay is the postage fee for sending the parts to SF
After that they pay for all the others
Mostly, no question asked for simple problem, but in this case i think sending the drop in is necessary

Another vote for inspecting the contacts on the tailcap and the LED. That's where I find most problems when I check someone else's light. An easy fix -- just use a little (very little) good electrical contact cleaner (and some DeOxit Gold if ya got some). If it's still not right just call SureFire C/S.

Does your G2L have a metal or nitrolon head? The P60L's were "over-driven", and didn't have enoguh heat sinking avaialbe, even more so in the nitrolon headed models...and this could easily lead the premature LED failure. Or, a circuit/driver could have fried in it...I have had this happen recently in TWO of Malkoff's...sad to say, but tis true.
